Baseball Team Drops a Pair of Non-Conference Games

TERRE HAUTE, Indiana – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games against Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology and Illinois Wesleyan University at Rose-Hulman's Art Nehf Field.

BW (5-8) lost the opener to Rose-Hulman (5-4) by a final score of 9-4.  The Yellow Jackets closed the day as it fell to Illinois Wesleyan (5-5) by a final score of 10-1.

Against the Engineers, BW scored four runs on eight hits as it plated one run in the first inning.  The Yellow Jackets added another run in the fifth on the solo homerun by junior second baseman Kevin Hagen (Brecksville/St. Ignatius).  BW got its final two runs in the eighth inning.   Rose-Hulman scored nine runs on 12 hits as it plated three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the eighth. 

Hagen 
led the Yellow Jacket offense as he went 3-for-4 with a homer, three runs batted-in (RBIs) and a run scored.  Sophomore third baseman Spencer Badia (Bellaire) went 2-for-5 with a run scored.  Three other BW hitters had a base knock.

On the mound, senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference right-hander Mark Zimmerman (Akron/Green) started and pitched four innings as he took the loss and dropped to 3-1 this season.  Zimmerman allowed seven runs (four earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts.  Three other Yellow Jackets relievers pitched the final five innings and allowed two runs on six hits.

Against the Titans, BW scored one run on four hits and it plated its lone run in the sixth inning. Illinois Wesleyan scored 10 runs on 13 hits as it pushed one runner across the plate in the third, five runners in the seventh and four in the eighth. BW committed four costly errors that allowed nine unearned runs to score during the contest.

The Yellow Jacket offense got a base hit each from Badia, junior catcher Alex Marcum (Granville), freshman Racco DiLauro(Akron/Springfield) and Zimmerman.  DiLauro's base knock was as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning.

On the mound, senior right-hander Alex Albright (North Royalton) started and pitched six innings and allowed one run on six hits with four strikeouts. He had his second straight solid outing end in a no-decision. Senior right-hander Connor Murphy (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) came on relief in the seventh inning and allowed four runs (none earned) on two hits in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss and fall to 0-2 this season. Three other BW relievers pitched final two and one-third innings and allowed five runs (none earned) on five hits.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, March 23 when they are supposed to open their home schedule versus Ohio Wesleyan University in a single, nine-inning game at Fisher Field at 4 p.m.
