MARIETTA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today at first place Marietta College at Don Schaly Stadium.
The twinbill was rescheduled to today after inclement weather postponed action yesterday. The Pioneers overcame a 4-1 BW lead in the opener to win, 5-4, and the Yellow Jackets captured the nightcap, 10-0, behind the complete-game and shutout pitching of sophomore Evan Lovick (Mentor).
In the opener, the Yellow Jackets (9-15, 3-3 OAC) scored twice in the top of each of the first two innings to build leads of 2-1 and 4-2. Marietta (15-10, 5-1 OAC) also scored once in the bottom half of the third inning to make it 4-3, and the Pioneers took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. That unfortunately ended the scoring.
Each team had nine base hits. The Yellow Jackets were led by All-OAC senior standouts Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) and Hunter Handel (Akron/ Green) with three hits apiece. Zimmerman, who also pitched the first seven innings of the opener, was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a double. Handel was 3-for-5 with a stolen base and a run batted-in (RBI).
On the mound, Zimmerman started and took the loss to fall to 4-3 this season. He allowed seven hits and five runs (one earned), struck out four and walked just one Pioneer batter. Two costly errors hurt Zimmerman and the Jackets and led to four unearned runs.
In the nightcap, BW again grabbed an early, 2-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets kept the lead until they exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh to built a commanding, 8-0 advantage. BW scored twice more in the eighth to build a 10-0 lead.
On the mound, BW got another excellent pitching performance. This time, sophomore Evan Lovick (Mentor) threw a complete-game, nine-ining six-hit shutout to improve 1-0 with two saves and lowered his earned run average to a mirscopic 0.77 this season. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
At the plate, BW outhit Marietta, 9-6, and was led by tthe quintet of Handel, sophomores Chase Knodle (Poland/ Seminary), Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/ Jonathan Alder) and Spencer Badia (Bellaire) and freshman Phil Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate) did most of the damage. Handel was 1-for-3 with a run scored, four more RBI, including three on a key double in the six-run seventh. Badia was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, his first home run this season, and he had a stolen base. Wells was 2-for-4. Kaltenbach was 2-for-5 with a run scored and a double. Knodle was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
BW is back in action on Wednesday, April 13 when the Yellow Jackets host OAC rival Heidelberg University for an OAC twinbill at Fisher Field. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
Fans are reminded that the official dedication ceremony for Fisher Field will take place on Saturday, April 23 at 12 noon and prior to BW's Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader versus Capital University. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
