Baseball Team Sweeps at ONU, Jackets Win 13-0 and 10-2

ADA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today at rival Ohio Northern University at Herb Strayer Field.  The Yellow Jackets (15-17, 8-4 OAC) won the first game, 13-0, and the captured the nightcap, 10-2. BW has won six of its last seven OAC games are remains in second place in the league standings.

In the opener, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early, 6-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning, two more in the second and another in the third. BW exploded for four more in the fifth and three in the ninth to earn its second shtout of the season.

On the mound, senior right-hander Alex Albright (North Royalton) started and pitched seven shutout innings to improve his record to 5-3 this season. He is tied with fellow senior righty Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) for the tea lead with five wins each. Albright allowed three base hits, struck out eight and walked just two ONU (14-14, 5-7 OAC) batters. He was relieved by senior righy Connor Murphy (Westford, Mass./ Northeast) who threw two scoreless innings, allowed one hit, struck out two and walked one.

At the plate, BW outhit the Polar Bears, 14-4. Six Yellow Jackets each had two base hits. Senior All-OAC first baseman Hunter Handel (Akron/ Green) was 2-for-5 with a double, run scored and a run batted-in. Junior All-OAC 2B Cole Nieto (Brunswick/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) was 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Junior left fielder/ catcher Alex Marcum (Granville) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/ Jonathan Alder) was 2-for3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Sophomore 3B Spencer Badia (Bellaire) was 2-for-6 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. And, freshman designated hitter Philip Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./ Saint Joseph's Collegiate) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

In the nightcap, BW gained a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The lead grew to 4-0 in the third when Zimmerman slugged his third home run of the season -- a three-run shot. The Polar Bears got back into the game with single runs in each of the bottom of the third and fifth innings to cut the Jacket lead in half at 4-2. BW scored three times in the seventh and once in the eighth to build an 8-2 advantage.

On the mound, junior right-hander Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) started and pitched the first five innings and improved to 2-0 this season. He allowed seven base hits, two runs (both earned), struck out two and walked two. He was relieved by sophomore left-hander Evan Lovick (Mentor) who pitched two hitless and scoreless innings and struck out one. Lovick was replaced by senior righty Tom Loeffler (Sjaher Heights) who pitched two scoreless innings to help secure the win. He did not allow a base hit and struck out three.

At the plate, BW outhit ONU, 13-7. Zimmerman and Handel led the way. Zimmerman was was 3-for-5 with a double, the three-run homer, three runs scored, four RBI and a pair of stolen bases. Handel was 2-for-4 with a run scored, his first homer of the season, three RBI and a sacrifice fly. In addition, Nieto and freshman RF Reese Albright (North Royalton) each had two hits. Nieto was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Albright was 2-for-5 with a run scored.

BW is back in action on Saturday, April 23 when it hosts OAC rival Capital University and also dedicates its baseball facility as Fisher Field. The dedication ceremony begins at 12:00 noon. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
