Baseball Team Beats Pitt-Greensburg, 19-5; Kaltenbach Sets Record

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated PittGreensburg, 19-5, in a non-conference game at Ridilla Field. The win was the sixth straight for the Yellow Jackets (18-17) and 10th in their last 12 games.  It also marked the eighth time during the 10-game win skein that BW has scored 10 or more runs.

The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the top of the first, two more in the second and another in the third to build a 5-0 lead. Pitt-Greensburg (20-15) scored four times in the bottom of the third to cut the BW lead to 5-4, but a nine-run Jacket fourth, highlighted by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Hunter Handel's (Akron/ Green) second home run of the game, a grand slam, broke the game wide open. BW added two more in the sixth and another in the seventh to lead 17-4. After Pitt-Greensburg scored once in the seventh, the Yellow Jackets scored their final two runs in the eighth.

On the mound, junior Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) started and pitched the first two and two-third innings. He was relieved by senior right-hander Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights) who continued his strong pitching out of the bullpen and went three and one-third innings to pick up the win and improve to 1-0 this season and lower his earned run average (ERA) to 2.20 overall. In addition, senior Matt Wittels (Lyndhurst/ Brush) pitched the seventh inning and seniors Connor Murphy (Westford, Mass/ Northeast) and Alex Albright (North Royalton) pitched ascoreless eighth and ninth innings and combined to strikeout five Bobcats hitters.

At the plate, The Yellow Jackets outhit the Bobcats, 22-10. Handel and sophomore catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/ Jonathan Alder) led the way as each had four hits. Handel was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, the two homers and a career-high six runs batted-in (RBI). Kaltenbach set a BW single-game record by going 4-for-5 with a school-record four doubles, four runs scored and a pair of RBI.

In addition, junior All-OAC right fielder Cole Nieto (Brunswick/ Cleveleand St. Ignatius) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two doubles and two RBI,  sophomore LF Alex Marcum was 2-for-5 with a double and run scored, junior second baseman Steve Montgomery (Canton/ Central Cathiolic stayed hot and was 2-for-4 with a double, runs scored and two RBI, and junior Kevin Hagen (Brecksville/ Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) came off the bench and went 2-for-2 with a double, run scored and an RBI.

BW is back in action this Saturday, April 30 when the Yellow Jackets travel to New Concord, Ohio to play an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Muskingum University. The first game begins at 1 p.m. BW (10-4 in the OAC) needs one victory in its final four OAC games to earn a spot in the four-team OAC Tournament.

The final regular season home games at Fisher Field are on Sunady, May 1, a single, nine-inning, non-conference game versus Hilbert (N.Y.) Collegeat 4 p.m. and an OAC doubleheader versus the University of Mount Union on Friday, May 6 at 1 p.m.  The May 1 game versus Hilbert is designated as Senior Recognition Day.

The 2016 OAC Tournamet starts on Thursday, May 12 at the site of the regular season champion. The winner of the OAC Tournament receives an automatic berth in the 2016 NCAA Division III Natioinal Tournament.
