BW Baseball Beats Farmingdale State (N.Y.) in Florida

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.  -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team beat Farmingdale (N.Y.) State University, 13-8, in its final game at the annual SnowBird Classic.  The Yellow Jackets, 7-5 overall, had a 5-3 mark in the Sunshine State.

The Yellow Jackets led 3-0 after three innings, trailed 4-3 after four and one-half innings but blew the game open with a seven-run bottom of the fifth to take a 10-4 lead. After Farmingdale State fought back with three runs in the top of the sixth, BW retaliated with three of its own in the bottom of the sixth to lead 13-7. The Rams cut the deficit to 13-8 with another run in the seventh.  That was the ed of the scoring.

At the plate, senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg), sophomore All-OAC 2B Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green), junior All-OAC first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) and sophomore designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/ Green) led the way with three hits each.  Handel was 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and a career-high four runs batted-in (RBI). Nine different Yellow Jackets each had a hit, nine scored a run or more and eight had an RBI or more.

On the mound, senior Jon Capadone (North Royalton) started and pitched the first fur and two-third innings and left with BW trailing 4-3. He allowed six hits, four runs (two earned) and walked one batter. Senior Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) got the final out of the fifth with a strikeout to earn the win and improve to 1-0. He was followed by Zimmerman who gave up three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. Senior Cory Durbin (Canton/ GlenOak) allowed one hit but got BW out of the sixth.  Sophomore Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights) pitched the seventh and eighth and allowed three hits and an unearned run and walked two batters. Sophomore "stopper" Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich./ Central) came on in the ninth and pitched a scoreless inning for his third save of the season.


BW resumes northern play on Tuesday, March 18 when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to play LaRoche (Pa.) College in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets open 2014 Ohio Athletic Conference play a week from today, Saturday, March 22 when Heidelberg University visits Heritage Field for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
