BW Baseball Loses to Webster (Mo.) in Florida
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.  -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost to 2013 NCAA Division III World Series participant Webster (Mo.) University, 6-3, in its final day at the annual SnowBird Classic.  The Yellow Jackets, 6-5 overall, also play Farmingdale State (Mass.) College in their final game at 1:00 p.m.

The Gorloks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. BW cut the deficit to 3-1 with a run in the third as senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) singled with one out, advanced to third on a Gorloks error and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior All-OAC 1B Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North).

Webster upped its lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth. BW scored in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-2 when Gugliotta again singled with one out, moved to second when sophomore All-OAC 2B Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) singled and to third when Chontos singled.  He scored when junior shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Midpark) reached on a fielder's choice.

The Jackets cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh when Gugliotta doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Zimmerman's second hit of the game. But that was as close as BW would get to Webster.  The Gorloks added an insurance run in the top of the eighth and another in the ninth to end the scoring. BW had one last chance in the bottom of the ninth with runners at the corners and one out but could not get the timely hit.

At the plate, Webster outhit BW, 14-12.  For the Yellow Jackets, Gugliotta and Zimmerman each went 3-for-4 to lead the way. Gugliotta had a double, two singles and three runs scored. Zimmerman had a double, two singles and a run batted-in (RBI).

On the mound, sophomore Alex Albright (North Royalton) pitched the first four and two-third innings, allowed eight hits, four runs (all four earned), struck out three and walked one. He took the loss to fall to 1-1 overall.

Albright was followed to the mound by senior Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) for one-third of an inning to end the fifth. Senior Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South) pitched the next two and two-third innings, allowed six hits and one earned run and struck out one Webster batter. Senior Cory Durbin (Canton/ GlenOak) relieved Waite and got the final out of the eighth.

Sophomore Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich./ Central) began pitching the ninth inning, but after two straight walks gave way to fellow sophomore Matt Wittels (Lyndhurst/ Brush) who got the first two batters out before an error plated Webster's final run.

BW resumes northern play on Tuesday, March 18 when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to play LaRoche (Pa.) College in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets open 2014 Ohio Athletic Conference play a week from today, Saturday, March 22 when Heidelberg University visits Heritage Field for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
