Yellow Jacket Baseball Swept by OAC-Leader John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team was swept in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at Schweikert Field. 
 
BW (14-10, 4-4 OAC) lost both games to John Carroll (14-7, 7-1 OAC) by scores of 7-3 and 8-7.
 
In game one, the Yellow Jacket scored three runs on nine hits as they plated all three runs in the fifth.   The Blue Streaks scored seven runs on 10 hits as it crossed the plate with five in the third, one in the fourth and one in the eighth.
 
Senior catcher Joe Hiller (Twinsburg) led the BW offense as he went 2-for-3 with a walk.   Senior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) had the other multiple hit game as he went 2-for-5 with a double.  Sophomore Mark Zimmerman (Akron/Green) went 1-for-5 with 2 runs batted in.  Four other Yellow Jacket hitters each had a base knock.
 
On the mound, senior Jon Capadona (North Royalton) took the loss as he allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits in two and third innings with a walk.   Junior Anthony Alioto, Jr. (Mayfield Heights/Mayfield) pitched the next 5.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and six walks.   Senior Cory Durbin (Canton/GlenOak) pitched a third of an inning and did not allow a run or hit.
 
In game two, BW scored seven runs on nine hits.  John Carroll scored eight runs on 12 hits.
 
The Yellow Jackets took an early 4-2 lead in the second inning on the RBI double by junior shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark) and the RBI single by senior centerfielder Kory Gillissie (Parma/St. Ignatius).  The Blue Streaks answered with three runs in the third and one in the sixth to take a 6-4 lead. BW cut the lead down to 6-5 in the seventh on the RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/Green).  John Carroll would answer right back in the bottom half with two runs to push the lead back to 8-5.  The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the top of the ninth but fell short 8-7.
 
Murphy had one hit and three RBI while Chontos, Gillissie, Handel and Zimmerman each had a base knock and an RBI to lead the BW offense.
 

On the mound, freshman Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) suffered the loss as he pitched 1.1 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits.   Durbin saw action again the second game as he went 4.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout.  Sophomore Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich./Central) pitched the final two innings and allowed two runs on three hits with a walk.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow (April 10) when they travel to Wooster to play The College of Wooster in a rescheduled non-conference game at Art Murray Field at 4 p.m. The Yellow Jackets return to OAC action on Saturday, April 12 when they host Wilmington College in an OAC doubleheader at 1 p.m
