Baldwin Wallace Wins at Rival Wooster, 16-12

WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team outslugged and defeated host and perennial NCAA Division III power The College of Wooster today, 16-12, at Art Murray Field.  The 16 Yellow Jacket runs was a season-high.


With its victory, BW, listed among the "others receiving votes" in this week's Division III national poll,  improves to a 15-10 record overall. With its loss, Wooster, also listed in the "others receiving votes", falls to 13-8 overall.

The Fighting Scots jumped out to an early, 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and increased its lead to 4-1 after three innings. From the fourth through sixth innings, BW outscored Wooster 13-4 to take a commanding, 15-8 advantage and led 16-8 before the Scots scored once in the bottom of the seventh and three times in the eighth to end the scoring.

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference second-baseman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) and junior All-OAC right-fielder Alex Green (Pickerington/ North). Zimmerman was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and five runs batted-in (RBI). Green led the team with three hits and was 3-for-5 with a run scored. In addition, senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, junior All-OAC first baseman/ designated hitter Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) was 1-for-5 with a grand slam in the fourth inning, two runs scored and a stolen base, and junior All-OAC shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBI.

On the mound, junior right-hander Brian Taricska (Bay Village/Bay) received his third start of the season.  He pitched two innings and gave up four earned runs on four hits and struck out three batters with no walks.  In relief, sophomore right-hander Matt Wittels (Lyndhurst/Brush) pitched the next two innings, allowed one hit, two runs (all earned) struck out three and walked two. Sophomore righty Connor Murphy (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) followed and pitched three and one-third innings, allowed five hits, six runs (two earned), struck out one and walked two to pick up his first career victory and is 1-0 this season. Senior Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) followed Murphy and pitched two-thirds of scoreless relief and allowed one hit. Sophomore closer Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich./ Central) pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowed one hit and struck out one batter.

BW is back in action on Saturday, April 12 when they host Wilmington College in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Heritage Field at 1:00 p.m.  Fans can follow the doubleheader via live stats at http://livestats.prestosports.com/baldwinwallace/
