BW Baseball Splits OAC Doubleheader to No.11 Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against No.11-ranked Marietta College at Don Schaly Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved until today due to inclement weather.

BW (10-8, 1-2 OAC) lost the first game 9-6 but won the nightcap by a score of 2-1 giving Marietta (12-6, 3-1) its first lost in conference play.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets took and early 3-0 after the through the top of the second inning before Marietta (12-5, 3-0 OAC) scored nine unanswered runs.  BW tacked on a run in the eighth and two in the ninth but came up short.

The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore second baseman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/Green) went 3-for-5 with his second career homerun, a double and three runs batted in (RBI).   Junior right fielder Alex Green (Pickerington/North) went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI and sophomore designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/Green) went 2-for-5 with a double and RBI. 

On the mound, five BW pitchers allowed nine runs on 10 hits.

In game two,  the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead after the top of the sixth inning but the Pioneers cut the lead down to 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning.

The BW offense scored two run on eight hits and was anchored by Green and junior shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark) as each went 2-for-4.  Five other BW players had a base knock.

On the mound, senior Cory Waite (Willoughby/South) pitched seven scoreless innings allowed just allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks as he improved to 2-0 overall.  Sophomore Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake. Mich./Central) pitched the final two innings and did not allow a run on one hit with two strikeouts to pick up his fourth save.

BW next plays at home against cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University on Wednesday, April 1 at Heritage Field for a single nine inning game at 4 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets then travel to Case on Thursday, April 2 for a single nine inning  game at 4 p.m. BW ends its week by hosting Otterbein University in an OAC twinbill on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m.
