PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Behind the strong pitching of sophomore righthander Alex Albright (North Royalton), the Baldwin Wallace University baseball team shut out Salem State (Mass.) University, 8-0, on the first day of competition at the annual SnowBird Classic. With their win, the Yellow Jackets improve to a 3-2 record and will play seven more games over the next six days in Port Charlotte, Florida.
On the mound, three Yellow Jacket pitchers combined to shutout the Viking offense. Albright started the game and provided seven innings of solid work. He allowed four hits and no runs, struck out five and walked just one batter as he improved to 1-0 this spring. He was relieved by sophomore Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights), who provided one shutout inning, and freshman Logan Heffernan (Lebanon), who gave up no runs in the ninth inning to seal the Yellow Jacket victory.

The BW offense scored four runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to help secure the win. The Yellow Jackets combined for 10 hits and eight walks. The offense was led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) who went 1-for-3 on a double that drove in three runs. Junior All-OAC first-baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) went 3-for-3 and drove in a run, and both senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC 3B Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) and sophomore leftfielder Jerry Scholle (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) went 2-for-4.
BW is back in action tomorrow, Monday, March 9, when it faces Elms (Mass.)
