BW Baseball Sweeps LaRoche (Pa.) in Non-Conference Doubleheader

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept LaRoche (Pa.) College in a non-conference doubleheader by scores of 3-2 and 9-4.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets (9-5) scored all three of their runs in the top of the second inning. The Redhawks (8-8) scored their two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

The BW offense scored its three runs on nine hits and was led by senior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) and junior first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) with two base knocks apiece.  Five other Yellow Jacket hitters provided a hit.

On the mound, freshman Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) made his second career start and pitched six innings.  Heffernan allowed two runs on six hits with a career-high six strikeouts and no walks.  Sophomore closer Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich. /Central) pitched a perfect seventh inning as he faced three batters and did not allow a hit for his third save of the season.

In the nightcap, BW scored a run in the first, fifth and six innings and three runs in the third and fourth innings.  LaRoche got a run in the bottom of the first and sixth and added two runs in the third.

The Yellow Jackets scored their nine runs on 13 hits and were led by sophomore second baseman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/Green) as he was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three runs batted in (RBI).  Chontos was 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.  Gugliotta was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Four BW batters had a base hit led by junior shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark) with a hit and three RBI.

On the mound, the Yellow Jackets used three pitchers that allowed four runs on seven hits.  Junior Anthony Alioto, Jr. (Mayfield Heights/Mayfield) started the game and picked up his first win of the season as he pitched three innings and allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.   Sophomore Matt Wittels (Brush/Lyndhurst) pitched the next three and a third innings and allowed one run on one hit with a strikeout and a walk.  Senior Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) got the final two outs of the game and did not allow a hit.

BW opens Ohio Athletic Conference action on Saturday, March 22 when they host Heidelberg University for a doubleheader starting at 1p.m. The Yellow Jackets host Pitt-Bradford on Sunday, March 23 in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.  Fans can follow both doubleheaders via live stats at http://livestats.prestosports.com/baldwinwallace/
