BW Baseball Team Selected to Play in Atlantic-Regional

BEREA, Ohio  -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team, 25-18 overall, has been selected to play in the 2014 NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament at Misericordia College in Dallas, Pennsylvania. BW, seeded fourth in the eight-team regional, will open play against the host school, fifth-seeded Misericordia, 29-13-1 overall, on Wednesday. The game times are yet to be determined.

In addition to BW, the other teams at Misericordia include No.1-seed Moravian, Pa. College (32-10), No.2-seed Rowan, N.J. University (32-10), No.3-seed Susquehanna, Pa. University (28-12), No.6-seed Keystone, Pa. College (27-12), No.7-seed Wesleyan, Conn. University (27-11) and No.8-seed Haverford, Pa. College (22-18).  There will be four games on Wednesday and Thursday with a regional champion being crowned on Saturday. The winner advances to the Division III World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin from May 23-27.

BW earned its berth in the tourney by placing second in last weekend's Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament and its record against regionally-ranked teams. In fact, the OAC placed four teams in the national tournament, the most of any conference in the country. OAC Tournament champion John Carroll University and regular season champ Marietta College will be playing in the Mideast Regional in Marietta and Heidelberg University will travel to play in the Midwest Regional at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

This is BW's fifth all-time appearance in the national tourney and for the first time in 23 years. The Yellow Jackets previously qualified in 1985, 1986, 1988 and 1991. BW has a 3-8 overall NCAA slate.

At the plate, BW is led by its top four in the lineup, senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg), sophomore All-OAC second baseman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green), junior All-OAC first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) and sophomore All-OAC designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/ Green). All four were first-team All-OAC picks and combined to hit .379 (256-for-676) with 157 runs scored, 51 doubles, eight triples, 155 runs batted-in (RBI) and 23 stolen bases.  As a team, BW is hitting .329 (498-for-1515) and is outscoring its opponents, 324-226.

On the mound, junior Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South) is the staff ace and is joined in the rotation by sophomore Alex Albright (North Royalton), freshman Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) and senior Cory Durbin (Canton/ GlenOak). Waite is 6-2 with a team-leading 2.63 earned run average (ERA). In the bullpen, sophomore Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich./ Central) is the "stopper" and is 2-2 with six saves and a 2.86 ERA. Overall, BW has a 4.50 team ERA with 238 strikeouts in 360 innings pitched. For more BW statistical information, please go to http://static.psbin.com/3/o/1z7pemjfdm1ftg/Base_Stats.pdf information
