BW Baseball Team Beats No.21 CWRU, 6-1

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team beat No.21-ranked and Cleveland cross-town and non-league rival Case Western Reserve University, 6-1, at Heritage Field.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets are now 12-8 overall and have won two straight. CWRU is 15-5 overall.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning as junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/ North) homered with two outs. The Spartans tied the game 1-1 with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning.

BW grabbed a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore left fielder Jerry Scholle (Medina/ Highland) singled and stole second. After an out, he moved to third when sophomore center fielder John Taylor (Stow/ Hudson) bunted for a hit. Taylor advanced to second when senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC third baseman and leadoff hitter Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) reached on an infield dingle to load the bases. Scholle scored on a single by sophomore All-OAC 2B Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) and Taylor scored a batter later via a Chontos sacrifice fly.

The lead increased to 5-1 in the sixth when junior All-OAC right fielder Alex Green (Pickerington/ North) singled, moved to second via a sacrifice bunt. After Scholle walked, Green scored when Taylor delivered a two-out single to left field that moved Scholle second. Scholle then stole third and scored when Gugliotta reached on a Spartan error.

BW added its final run in the bottom of the eighth to lead 6-1 when seior Drew Mahler (Wooster) had a pinch hit single and junior catcher Anthony Eder (Cuyahoga Heights) pinch ran for him. Eder moved to second via a sacrifice bunt, to thirdon a ground out and scored on a passed ball.

At the plate, BW outhit the Spartans, 11-7. The Yellow Jackets were led by Green, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored; Scholle, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases; and Taylor, wo was 2-for-3 with a run scored, run batted-in and a stolen base.

On the mound, senior righthander Jon Capadona (North Royalton) started and pitched seven innings, allowed seven hits and one run (earned), struck out two and walked one CWRU batter. He improved to 2-1 overall. Capadona was replaced by senior lefthander Cory Durbin (Canton/ GlenOak) in the eighth for a 1-2-3 inning. Sophomore "stopper" Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich.) Central pitched the ninth inning and hit one Spartan batter but did not allow a run.

BW returns to action tomorrow when they travel to No. 21 CWRU on Thursday, April 3 for a single game at 4:00 p.m. BW ends its week by hosting OAC-rival Otterbein University in an OAC twinbill on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m.
