BW Baseball Team Sweeps The Twinbill at Transylvania (Ky.)

LEXINGTON, Kentucky  -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team sweep a doubleheader at host Transylvania (Ky.) University at Marquard Field.  The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 8-5, and won the nightcap, 8-5.

In the first game, the BW offense scored eight runs on 14 hits was led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg). Gugliotta went 3-for-5 with a double, homerun, two runs scored and three runs-batted-in. Sophomore All-OAC second baseman Mark Zimmerman (Akron/Green), junior All-OAC right fielder Alex Green (Pickerington/North) and senior designated hitter Jay Yost (Bascom/Hopewell-Loudon) each had two hits, respectively.

On the mound, four Yellow Jacket pitchers allowed five Pioneer runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and five walks. Senior Jon Capadona (North Royalton) earned the victory to even his record at 1-1. Capadona threw five and one-third innings, allowed five hits and four runs (all earned), struck out two and walked three. He was followed to the mound by sophomores Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights), Zimmerman and Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich./ Central). Cichocki earned the save with a spotless ninth, including a strikeout.

In the nightcap, BW compiled eight runs on 13 hits. Zimmerman led the Yellow Jackets at the plate going 4-for-5 with a double and triple, three RBI and two runs scored. In addition, Gugliotta and senior catcher Chaz McGrain (Olmsted Falls) went 3-for-4 respectively.  

On the mound, the BW pitching staff gave up five runs on 10 hits. Junior Anthony Alioto Jr. (Mayfield Village/ Mayfield) started and tossed the first three and two-third innings and left with a 7-5 lead. He was followed to the hill by senior Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg), sophomore Matt Wittels (Lyndhurst/Brush), senior Cory Durbin (Canton/ GlenOak) and Cichocki. Wittels pitched three scoreless innings, allowed three hits and struck out five to earn the win and improve to 1-0. Cichocki picked up his second save of the day with another spotless ninth, including a whiff. 

BW returns to action on Wednesday, March 5 when it travels to Dayton to face NCAA Division I the University of Dayton at 2 p.m.
