RIVERDALE, NEW YORK – The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team defeated the College of Mount St. Vincent (N.Y.), 25-16, in the Peter Jay Sharp Center.
With its win, BW is 2-0 overall and next wrestlers on Friday, December 21 at the Johnson & Wales (R.I.) University Invitational Tournament. Action begins at 10:00 a.m. With its loss, Mount St. Vincent is now 1-2 overall.
The Yellow Jackets were led by four freshmen, including 149-pounder Joey Schmidt (Hinckley/ Brunswick), 157-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) and freshman 174-pounder Ben LeBrun (Strongsville), who all won by major decision.
Schmidt defeated Vincent Lombardo, 11-2, and is now 10-6 overall. Chase beat Brian Adriance, 8-0, and is 19-6 overall. His 19 wins leads the team. Shapiro defeated Dan Mattrazzo, 10-2, and is now 13-7 overall. LeBrun beat Adeshola Logunleko, 9-1, and is 9-8 overall.
In addition, freshman 125-pounder Jesse Gunter (Akron/Coventry), who has twice been the Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week in his first six weeks as a collegiate grappler, won by forfeit to improve to 14-1 overall. Freshman 133-pounder Zach Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) beat \ Marius Kola, 4-3, and is now 14-7 overall.
Following its trip to Johnson & Wales, BW is idle until January 12, 2013 when it travels to Manchester, Indiana to compete at the Manchester College Invitational.
