BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 22-18, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center. This was BW's final match of the season.
With the loss, the Yellow Jackets end their season with a record of 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the OAC record. With the victory, the Blue Streals improved to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the OAC.
BW was led by junior 133-pounder Andrew Taylor (Columbus/ Worthington Kilborne) who pinned John Carroll's Doug Hayes in 4:07. Taylor ends the season with a mark of 21-16 overall with six pins.
In addition, freshman 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) and freshman 184-pounder Brian Fox (Dublin/ Scioto) each won by decision. Shapiro defeated John Carroll's Jake Vincent, 9-3, to finish his inaugural season with a 27-14 record. Fox defeated the Blue Streaks' Danny McNamara, 6-0, to finish 8-16 overall.
Also, winning by forfeit was freshman 125-pounder Jesse Gunter (Akron/ Coventry), who is ranked fifth in the latest NWCA/ Brute-adidas Division III poll, Gunter ends his season 29-2 overall and second on the team in wins.
The Yellow Jackets had a strong second season under the direction of Head Coach Jamie Gibbs, including winning their first tournament title (at Manchester, Indiana University on January 12). This year's young team consisted on 14 freshmen, two sophomores and one junior.
Freshman 157-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./ Cathedral Prep) led the team in victories with 32 and had a 32-13 record. Gunter was second, Shapiro third. In addition to the trio, Taylor and freshman 285-pounder Joe Belford (Berea/St. Edward) all had 20 or more victories.
