CLEVELAND, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team defeated Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University, 41-3, today (Saturday, December 8, 2012) in the Horsburgh Gymnasium. This was the first dual match of the season for BW after four weeks of tournament competition.

With its win, BW is 1-0 and next wrestlers on Saturday, December 15 at Mount St. Vincent College in Riverdale, New York at 7:00 p.m. With its loss, Case is now 0-2 overall.

The Yellow Jackets were led by, freshman 133-pounder Zach Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) and freshman 184-pounder Brian Fox (Dublin/Scioto) each won by pin.  Walker defeated Xander Straughter in 3:25 and is now 11-7 with three pins.   Fox defeated Ryan Brubaker in 2:15 and now has a mark of 3-4 with two pins.

In addition to walker, freshman 149-pounder Joey Schmidt (Hinckley/Brunswick) and freshman 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) each won by major decision.  Schmidt improved to 9-6 on the season with his 11-3 win over Zach McCarthy, 11-3.  Shapiro posted a 13-5 victory over Evan McDowell and now is 12-7.

Freshman 157-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa/Cathedral Prep), freshman 174-pounder Ben Lebrun (Strongsville) and freshman 285-pounder Joe Belford (Berea/St. Edward) all won by decision.   Chase defeated Eric Sullivan 7-6 to improve to 18-6. Lebrun won by a 9-2 decision over Brian Snyder and is now 8-8.  Belford defeated Dale English by a score of 6-3 and now is 13-6.

Winning by forfeits were freshman 125-pounder Jesse Gunter (Akron/Copley) and junior 141-pounder Andrew Taylor (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne).  Gunter is now 13-1 and Taylor is 8-6.

Following its trip to Mount St. Vincent, the Yellow Jackets end the 2012 portion of their schedule on December 21 at the Johnson & Wales (R.I.) Tournament. Action begins at 10:00 a.m.
