Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Mount Union in Home Opener

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference game to the University of Mount Union by a final score of 14-10 on the Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium. 

BW (0-2, 0-2 OAC) was led by senior midfielder Maddie Ray (Cuyahoga Falls/Richfield Revere) as she scored three goals and added two assists. Senior attacker Alexis O'Neill (Westlake) contributed three goals. Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Hradek (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls) added two goals of her own.

Mount Union (1-0, 1-0 OAC) was led by senior attacker Sydney Bumbarger, who scored five goals and added three assists. Junior attacker Mackenzie Lewis also contributed five goals and two assists. Senior attacker Kaitlyn Murphy also added two goals.

The Purple Raiders opened up the scoring with a goal by Bumbarger coming at 28:33 into the first half. The Yellow Jackets quickly responded with a goal by Ray. Mount Union continued the back-and-forth action with a quick 2-0 run when sophomore midfielder Sam Karr found the back of the net at 25:10. Baldwin Wallace responded with a 2-0 run of their own when O'Neill scored the free position goal. The Purple Raiders again found the back of the net to take the lead with the goal coming by Lewis. The Yellow Jackets found their stride on offense going on a 3-0 run when Ray found the back of the cage with her second goal coming at 7:33 remaining. Mount Union closed at the scoring with another 2-0 to tie things back up, when Lewis hit the back of the cage with 3:14 remaining to tie things up at 6-6.

In the second half, the Purple Raiders continued their run with a goal coming by Bumbarger with 28:01 remaining. Baldwin Wallace equalized things when Hradek hit the back of the cage. Bumbarger once again found the back of the cage for Mount Union as they retook the lead 8-7 with 18:53 remaining. The Yellow Jackets were able to regain the lead as they went a 2-0 run when O'Neill scored the free-position goal with 14:51 remaining in the half. The Purple Raiders finished their scoring with a 6-0 run when Murphy scored with 1:42 remaining. Baldwin Wallace closed out the scoring when O'Neill hit the back of the net as time expired.

In the cage, senior All-OAC goalkeeper Ashleigh Hildreth (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) faced 27 total shots and recorded nine saves.

The Yellow Jackets, whose game on Saturday February 27 against Muskingum University was cancelled, next plays on Wednesday March 3 as they travel to University Heights to take on crosstown rival John Carroll University at 7:00 p.m.
