ANDERSON, Indiana – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team was defeated by Trine (Ind.) University, 62-56 in the first game of the Anderson University Tip-Off Tournament in the O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
BW (1-1) will face the loser of tonight's second game between Anderson and North Park (Ill.) University in tomorrow's consolation game at 2 p.m. Trine (2-0) advances to tomorrow's championship game at 4 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets had one player score in double figures as junior forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) scored a game and career-high 22 points. Clark has now set a career-best in points in each game this season. Junior forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and added eight points.
The Thunder had three players score in double figured led by Ashley Elliott with 20 points. Brandi Dawson tallied 19 points and Alivia Recker contributed 10.
In the first quarter, BW jumped out to an early 5-2 lead on a three-pointer by junior point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) at the 6:58 mark. Trine responded with a 5-2 run to tie the game at 7-7 on pair of free throws by Elliott at 4:50. The Yellow Jackets closed out the stanza on a 10-6 run to take a 15-13 lead on a layup by Clark with 30 seconds remaining.
In the second period, BW extended its lead to as many as four points on three occasions before Trine tied the game at 25-25 on a pair of free throws by Elliott at the 3:53 mark. The Thunder outscored the Jackets 8-4 the remainder of the stanza to lead 33-29 at the intermission.
The third quarter was a quarter of runs as BW opened the period on a 12-1 run to take a 41-34 lead on trey by sophomore guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park/Fairview) at the 6:10 mark. Trine responded with a 10-0 run of its own to regain the lead at 44-41 on layup by Dawson at 3:04. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Thunder 7-5 over the remainder of the quarter to trail 48-49 after three periods of play.
BW tied the game in the early stages of the fourth quarter at 49-49 when senior guard Janaya Feaster (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) at the 8:24 mark. Trine would outscore the Yellow Jackets 13-7 over the remainder of the game to secure the 62-56 victory.
After Saturday's consolation game, BW is back in action on Tuesday, November 24 when it travels to nearby Oberlin for a non-conference game against Oberlin College in the Philips Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
