Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 10 and OAC Leader Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team was defeated by No. 10-nationally ranked and Ohio Athletic Conference leader Ohio Northern University, 62-43, in an OAC game inside the ONU Sports Center.

BW (14-10, 10-7 OAC) was led by sophomore guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park / Fairview) with a team-high 10 points.

 

Ohio Northern (20-3, 15-1 OAC) wins the season series against the Yellow Jackets and now has won seven straight and 19 of its last 20 games.   The Polar Bears had two players score in double digits led by sophomore forward Amy Bullimore who scored a game-high 14 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Britt Lauk also added 13 points.

Ohio Northern jumped out to an early 6-2 lead when senior forward Karissa Steffas hit a jumper at the 7:20 mark. The Yellow Jackets cut the Polar Bears' lead to 10-9 when senior guard Janaya Feaster (Akron / Archbishop Hoban) made a layup with 2:47 left in the first.  Ohio Northern outscored BW 4-0 to jump up to a 14-9 lead at the end of the first period.

 
In the second quarter BW went on 4-0 run to make the score 14-13 when Feaster made another layup at the 7:57 mark. The Polar Bears answered the Yellow Jackets run with a 6-0 run to jump back up to a 20-13 lead when Lauk made a shot from beyond the arc with 6:37 left in the quarter. BW outscored Ohio Northern 6-5 to close out the first half, but the Polar Bears still had a 25-19 lead at halftime.
 
Ohio Northern went on a 13-3 run in the third quarter when Bullimare made a free throw with 1:37 left in the third quarter giving the Polar Bears a 38-22 lead. Both teams made three points at the end of the third period to make the score 41-25 going into the last quarter of play.
 
In the fourth quarter The Yellow Jackets went on a 7-3 run when Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) made a free throw at the 7:01 mark cutting the Ohio Northern lead to 44-32. The Polar Bears answered with an 11-0 run when Britt Lauck knocked down a three-pointer with 5:04 left in regulation giving Ohio Northern a 55-32 lead. BW outscored the Ohio Northern 11-7 in the last five minutes of play, but The Polar Bears held on for the win.
 
The Yellow Jackets close out the regular season portion of their schedule on Saturday, February 20 when they travel to Bexley for an OAC game against Capital University in the Capital Center at 3 p.m.
