Women’s Basketball Ends Regular Season with Win at Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team ended the regular season portion of its schedule with a 66-62 Ohio Athletic Conference win to Capital University in the Capital Center.

BW (15-10, 11-7 OAC) will enter next week's OAC Tournament as the fourth seed.  The Yellow Jackets had three players score in double figures. Freshman forward Hannah Fecht (Hilliard / Davidson) scored a career-high 16 points. Along with Fecht, junior guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) scored 17 points and junior forward Sydney Clark (Parma / Lake Ridge Academy) scored 14.

Capital (19-6, 12-6 OAC) splits the season series against the Yellow Jackets and clinches the third seed in next week's OAC Tournament.  The Crusaders had two players score in double figures and were led by senior forward Kristen Thompson with 19 points and senior guard Jenna Erwin with 16 points, respectively.

In the first quarter, BW jumped out to an early 8-5 lead when junior forward Clara Lemmon (Canton / Louisville) hit a three pointer at the 6:36 mark. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 15-9 when freshman guard MacKenzi Matthews (North Royalton) connected from beyond the arc at the 2:18 mark. Capital finished the quarter on a 6-4 run to cut the deficit down to 19-15 going into the second quarter.

The Yellow Jackets went on a 10-5 run to the start the second quarter and increase their lead to 29-20 when senior forward Alissa Munro (Mansfield / Lexington) hit a three pointer at the 6:10 mark. The Crusaders outscored BW 6-4 to close out the first half, but the Yellow Jackets still had a 33-26 lead at halftime.

Capital went on a 6-0 run to start the third quarter when senior guard Shelby Sigman connected on a three pointer at the 8:03 mark to cut the Yellow Jacket lead down to 33-32. Both teams made six points at the end of the third period to make the score 39-38 going into the last quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, BW went on a 7-4 run when Clark knocked down a three pointer with 7:52 left in regulation giving the Yellow Jackets a 46-42 lead. BW extended their lead to 59-54 when Colombo hit a free throw with 2:05 left in the quarter. The Crusaders outscored BW 8-7 in the last two minutes of play, but the Yellow Jackets held on for the win.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Tuesday, February 22 when they host the first game of a women's and men's OAC Tournament doubleheader at 6 p.m.   BW will play the winner of Monday's first round game between fifth seeded Otterbein University and eighth seeded Heidelberg University.
