WILMINGTON, Ohio – Junior point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Starsburg) and freshman guard Hanna Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) each scored career-high in points to help the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team overcome a slow start and pick up a 65-56 Ohio Athletic Conference overtime victory agaisnt Wilmington College in the Fred Raizk Arena.
The Quakers had two players score in double digits led by Mackenzie Campbell with a game-high 20 points. Ellie Kivell tallied 13 points while Mary Moyer had six points and grabbed a game-high tying 12 rebounds.
The game was tied at 5-5 after the first quarter as both teams struggled from the field with each squad hitting one field goal. BW was 1-of-15 while Wilmington was 1-of-11. The Yellow Jackets converted 3-of-4 from the foul line while the Quakers were a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.
In the early stages of the third quarter, the game was tied on four occasions with the last coming at 25-25 when the Yellow Jackets' Clark converted a pair of free throws at the 3:53 mark. BW then used a 7-0 run to take the largest lead of the game for either team at 32-25 as freshman guard Alex Starr (Millersburg/West Holmes) split a pair of free throws at 1:05. The Quakers closed out the period on a 5-0 run to trail 32-30 after three quarters of play.
Wilmington opened the fourth stanza on a 9-0 run to take a 39-32 lead on layup by Campbell at the 5:22 mark. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 6-2 run to cut the lead down to 41-38 on a layup by Colombo at 3:46. Wilmington came right back with a 5-2 run to extend its lead to 46-40 on a layup by junior forward Hannah Haeseker at the 2:49 mark. BW answered back with a 8-2 run to tie the game and force it into overtime when Fecht knocked down a three-pointer with 57 seconds remaining. The Yellow Jackets had a chance to win the game but missed a shot at the buzzer.
BW opened the overtime session on a 7-2 run to take a 55-50 lead on triple by Clark at 2:09. The Quakers cut the lead down to four points at 58-54 when junior forward Mary Moyer buried a trey at the 1:10 mark. The Yellow Jackets outscored Wilmington 7-2 over the remainder of the extra period to secure the win.
BW is back in action on Monday and Tuesday, December 28 and 29 when it travels to Springfield to compete in the Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic hosted by Wittenberg University. The Yellow Jackets first play Wittenberg on December 28 at 6 p.m. and then faces NAIA Purdue-Calumet on December 29 at 2 p.m.
