Women Upset No. 10 ONU, 65-58, in OAC Tourney Semifinal in Ada

ADA, Ohio – Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC guard Sydney Clark (Parma/ Lake Ridge Academy) scored a game-high-tying 15 points as the fourth-seeded Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team upset Ohio Athletic Conference rival and top-seeded Ohio Northern University, 65-58, in the semifinal round of the 2016 OAC Tournament in the ONU Sports Center.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets (17-10) advance to the OAC Championship Game on Saturday at 3 p.m. and play second-seeded the University of Mount Union in Alliance. BW is the defending OAC Tournament champion. Last year, BW defeated Capital, 50-46, in Berea. t. Union was an 81-72 winner against third-seeded Capital in Alliance in the other semifinal game.  

In addition to Clark for BW, senior forward Alissa Munro (Mansfield/ Lexington) and senior guard Janaya Feaster (Akron/ Archbishop Hoban) came off the bench to score 11 and 10 points, respectively. ONU (22-4) was led by junior guard Britt Lauck with a game-high-tying 15 points. The Polar Bears now must await a decision by the NCAA Division III Tournament Selection Committee as to whether it will receive an at-large berth in this year's tournament.

Keys to the Yellow Jacket win included forcing 13 ONU turnovers and grabbing 10 offensive rebounds. In addition, BW made 11 of 23 three-pointers for 47.8 percent and 14 of 18 foul shots for 77.8%.

In the first quarter, the Polar Bears jumped out to a 7-3 lead at 7:41 before the Yellow Jackets tied it at 9-9 at 5:40 when Munro made the first of two three-pointers in the stanza. BW went on to build three separate leads of seven points with the last at 22-15 at 1:28 when Colombo made two foul shots. BW also led 22-17 at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, BW scored the first six points and grabbed a 28-17 lead at 8:21 when junior All-OAC center Clara Lemmon (Louisville) made one of two foul shots. ONU cut BW's lead to six on two separate occasions before the Yellow Jackets scored five straight points to rebuild their 11-point advantage at 40-29 when Munro canned her third triple of the half. BW led 40-31 at the intermission.

In the third quarter, BW rebuilt a double-digit lead at 44-34 at 6:18 when freshman Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/ Olentangy) made a layup, but ONU scored seven straight points to cut the BW lead to 44-31 at 3:31. Undaunted, the Yellow Jackets scored six straight points, including a trey by Womeldorf to push the lead back to 50-41 at 1:29. BW also led 50-43 at the end of the stanza.

In the fourth quarter, ONU cut the BW leadto 50-45 at 805 but the Jackets outscored the Polar Bears 8-1 in the next four minutes to take their largest lead of 12 points at 58-46 at 4:05 when Clark nailed a trey.  The closest the POlar Bears would get after that point was five points on two separate occasions.

The winner of the OAC Tournament receives an automatic berth in the 2016 NCAA Division III National Tournament which begins next weekend.
