Women's Basketball Beats Muskingum, 79-51

BEREA, Ohio  –   Sophomore guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park/ Fairview) scored a game and career-high 18 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team beat Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum University, 79-51, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.  This was the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader. BW also has beaten the Fighting Muskies 14 straight times and dating back to February 14, 2009.

Smith scored 16 first half points to tie her career-high and then added two more markers in the second half. In addition to Smith for BW (11-6, 7-3 OAC), freshman forward Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/ Davidson) scored 13 points. A big key to the win was BW making 12 three-pointers.

Muskingum (4-13, 0-10 OAC) was led by junior forward Mallory Smith's 13 points.

In the first quarter, BW jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead at 8:53 as Smith made a three-pointer at 9:39 and then canned a pair of foul shots. The Yellow Jacket lead grew to double digits at 19-7 at 5:12 when Smith nailed her second triple. BW also led 24-14 at the end of the stanza.

In the second quarter, BW built a pair of 14-point leads with the last at 33-19 at 6:23 when Fecht connected on a trey. The Muskies scored six straight points to cut the Jacket lead to 33-25 at 4:42. BW returned the favor and had an 8-0 run to build its largest lead at 41-25 at 1:12 when junior All-OAC forward Clara Lemmon (Louisville) made a layup. BW led 41-27 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Jackets increased their lead to 19 points at 51-32 at 6:38 when senior guard Alissa Munro (Mansfield/ Lexington) canned a three-pointer. BW extended its lead to 21 points on three separate occasions with the last at 64-43 at 1:16 when senior guard Ally Dehart (Beaver, Pa./ Beaver) made one of two foul shots.

In the fourth quarter, BW kept up its hot shooting and led by a game-high of 31 points at 5:55 when freshman Hunter Feltner (Willard) made a layup, was fouled and made her charity toss to complete the old-fashioned three-point play!

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, January 27 when BW travels to Alliance to play an OAC game at the University of Mount Union at 7:30 p.m. The next home game is on Wednesday, February 3 when BW hosts Heidelberg University in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m.
