SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team closed out the Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic with a 57-52 defeat to NAIA Purdue University-Calumet inside the Pam Evans Smith Arena.
BW (7-4) had two players score in double figures led by freshman guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson), who came off the bench, with a team-high 11 points Freshman forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) added a career-high tying 10 points. Sophomore forward Megan Schubert (Defiance/Ayersville) also came off the bench to grab a game-high and career-best nine rebounds.
Purdue-Calumet (11-3), who is ranked 15th-nationally in NAIA, had three players score in double digits led by Jada Buggs with a game-high 18 points and team-best tying six rebounds. Katie Wampler scored 12 points and grabbed a team-best tying six rebounds off the bench. Patrice McBee contributed 10 points and also grabbed a team-best tying six rebounds.
The Peregrines opened the game with a 5-2 run on a layup by McBee at the 7:47 mark. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 6-4 run to cut the lead down to 9-8 on a layup by junior forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) at 6:44. Purdue-Calumet closed the opening period on a 9-2 run to lead 18-10.
BW opened the second stanza on a 6-2 run to cut the lead down to 20-16 on a three-pointer by senior guard Ally Dehart (Beaver, Pa.) at the 7:07 mark. Both teams would each score seven points the remainder of the quarter with the Peregrines leading 27-23 at the intermission.
Purdue-Calumet opened the second half on a 9-2 run to extend its lead to 36-25 on a pair of free throws by Wampler at the 5:20 mark. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 13-3 run to cut the lead down to one point at 39-38 on a layup by senior guard Janaya Feaster (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) at 2:58. Both teams each scored six points down the stretch with the Peregrines leading 45-44 after three quarters of play.
Purdue-Calumet opened the final period with a 7-2 run to extend its lead to 52-46 as Wampler converted two from the charity stripe at the 2:10 mark. BW outscored the Peregrines 6-5 the remainder of the game.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Monday, January 4 when they travel to Delaware for a non-conference clash against Ohio Wesleyan University in the Branch Rickey Arena at 7 p.m.
