Women Defeat Capital For Second Straight Victory

BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) scored 13 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Capital University, 57-50, today (Saturday, January 7, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the OAC. The Crusaders drop to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the OAC.

In addition to Lairson for B-W, junior All-OAC forward Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) scored 10 points.  Capital was led by senior forward Shalena Hawkins with a game-high tying 13 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior forward Stacy Timerman and junior guard Rebekah Will each contributed 11 points.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the 18:59 mark when Hilary Kuhns nailed a jumper. Capital extended its lead with two straight lay-ups by Timmerman and Will to open up a 6-0 advantage with 17:39 left

B-W cut into the lead, 6-2, when junior forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) grabbed the offensive rebound and put it back in at 17:06. After a quick basket by the Crusaders, the Jackets rallied back with a three-pointer from freshman guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) and a lay-up by Coulter to cut Capital to just one point, 8-7, with 15:28 to go in the half.

The Crusaders would extend their lead, 15-7, using a 7-0 run capped off on a jumper by Kuhns on a jumper at the 10:30 mark.

After trading a few baskets, B-W would use a 9-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 18-17, on a three-pointer by Carpenter at 7:23.

The Yellow Jackets would outscore Capital 17-8 over the remainder of the half to take a 35-25 lead into the intermission.  The 10-point lead by B-W was the largest lead of the half for either squad.
Capital opened the second on a 5-0 run to cut deficit to five points, 35-30, on a jumper by Timmerman with 18:10 left to play.
B-W answered back with a 7-2 run to extend it lead back to 10 points on a layup  by sophomore forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin /Columbian) with 13:40. The Yellow Jackets would gain their biggest lead of the game, 12 points, and 46-34, when sophomore forward Natalia Simovic (Seven Hills / Normandy) scored on a layup at the 11:18 mark.
The Crusaders would use a 7-0 run to cut the B-W lead down to three points, 47-44, after a tip-in from Hawkins with 4:55 remaining.
The Yellow Jackets would outscore Capital 10-6 over the final 4:19 to secure the 57-50 victory

B-W is back in action on Wednesday, January 11 when it travels to Alliance to take on the Purple Raiders of Mount Union in an OAC game in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex (MAAC) at 7:30 p.m.   The game will be carried LIVE by campus radio station WBWC 88.3 The Sting and via the Internet at http://www.wbwc.com. The pregame show starts 15 minutes prior to tipoff.  The next home game is on Saturday, January 21 when B-W will take on Marietta College for the second time this season in an OAC game in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m.
