Women's Basketball Team Defeats Muskingum

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/Hoover) scored a team-high 17 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Muskingum University, 66-55, today (Saturday, December 17, 2011) in an OAC game in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

With the win,  the Yellow Jackets improve to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the OAC.  The Muskies fall to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the OAC.

Muskingum was led by senior forward Amanda Dobbins with a game-high 20 points and a game-high eight rebounds.  Senior forward Hannah Nelson added 18 points.

The Yellow Jackets opened up the scoring when junior forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House /Miami Trace) made a lay-up attempt at 18:22. That sparked an early 7-3 lead for the Jackets capped off when split a pair of free throws at the 15:59 mark.

The Muskies fought back to tie the game, 9-9, scoring the equalizer at the 14:06 mark on a jumper from senior forward Amanda Dobbins.

B-W used a 7-3 run to regain the lead, 20-12, when Carpenter hit from behind the three-point line at 8:57.  Muskingum would cut the deficit to four points, 25-21 on a jumper from Nichols with 3:39. The Jackets would outscore the Muskies 7-5 the remainder of the half to lead 32-26 lead at intermission.

In the second half, B-W would strike first on a three-pointer from Carpenter at 18:51 to extend the Jackets lead to 35-26. The Muskies would not let down, cutting the lead down to four points, 43-39, at 11:53.

B-W would outscore Muskingum the rest of the way 23-16 and extended its lead to as many as 11 points on three occasions with the last coming on the second of two free throws by Rossman with 40 seconds remaining. The Muskies could only come as close as five points on a pair of free throws by Dobbins at 2:36.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, December 20 when they will travel to Westerville to take on the Cardinals of Otterbein University in the Rike Center at 7:30 p.m.   The next home game is on Wednesday, January 4 when the team will host Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m.
