Jackets Fall to Capital, 71-39

COLUMBUS, OHIO  – Junior All-OAC guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) with 13 points, including three three-pointers as Baldwin-Wallace College falls to Capital University, 71-39, today (Saturday, February 11 2012) in a key Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Capital Center. The Capital win ended a season-high six-game B-W win streak.

With its loss, B-W dropped to 15-8 overall and 10-6 in the OAC. With the win, Capital improved to 15-8 overall and 10-6 in the OAC and is now tied with B-W in the OAC Standings. The key to the Capital win was shooting 51.7 percent from the floor compared to B-W's 28.3% shooting.

In addition to Carpenter,
freshman guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) contributed nine points and three rebounds.

Capital was led by junior guard Rebecca Will, who scored 16 point for the Crusaders. In addition to Will, senior forwards Hilary Kuhns and Shalena Hawkins scored 14 points each.

Capital scored the first four points of the game and led 4-0 at the 17:35 mark when Hawkins made a jump shot. B-W got on the board at the 16:35 mark when sophomore forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/ Columbian) made a layup to cut the lead to 4-2. The Crusaders then went on a 9-0 run to build an 11-point lead at 13-2 at 13:27 when Hawkins made a layup. Then following a three-pointer by Carpenter, Caton made a layup, was fouled and made her free throw for a three-point play and a 16-5 Crusader advantage.


Following a basket by Yellow Jacket sophomore center Natalia Simovic (Seven Hills/ Normandy), Kuhns increased the lead to 19-7 when she drilled a triple at 10:54. Then following a Simovic free throw at 10:31, Crusader sophomore guard Cookie Geriski nailed a trey at 9:37 to extend the lead to 22-8 at 9:37.


B-W stung back with a 5-0 run to cut Capital's lead to single digits at 22-13 when Carpenter made a three-pointer at 8:29 but a 4-1 Capital run put it back to 12 points at 26-14 when Hawkins made a jumper at 6:53. Another 13-8 Crusader run, including a jumper by junior forward Stacy Timmerman with five seconds left before the intermission gave Capital a 39-22 halftime lead.


In the second half, Carpenter scored the first points on a jumper at 19:20 to cut the deficit to 39-24, but a pair of buckets by Hawkins and three-pointers by Kuhns at 15:07 and Will at 14:39 gave the Crusaders a 49-24 bulge. A basket by Mangas at 14:11 ended the run and made the score 49-26.


The largest lead of the game was 32 points at 71-39 with 45 seconds left when sophomore forward Maggie Donnellan made a jump shot. The closest B-W would get was 23 points at 60-37 with 8:08 left when freshman guard Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) scored, was fouled and made the free throw for the three-point play.


The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, February 15 when they travel to Alliance, Ohio to play the University of Mount Union in the McPherson Academic & Athletic Complex at 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the game live on the internet at

Media and fans are reminded that the B-W will televise its Feb. 18 men's and women's basketball doubleheader versus Ohio Northern University on SportsTime Ohio. The women's game will be shown three times on STO. The dates and times are on Feb. 18 at 11:00 p.m. and on Feb. 19 at 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  B-W has broadcast more of its athletics events on regional cable TV than any other Division III school.


In addition on Feb. 18, the B-W men's team will host the Fourth Annual "Take a Kid to the Game" Day. Children up to the eighth grade will be admitted for free when accompanied by an adult. Prior to its 4:00 tipoff versus ONU, children can have their faces painted by the B-W Cheerleaders or can play games with the cheerleaders and "Stinger", the Yellow Jacket mascot. Following the game, B-W student-athletes and coaches will be available to sign autographs.
