Women's Basketball Team Falls to Ohio Northern

ADA, OHIO -- Junior All-OAC forward Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/Hoover) scored 12 points but the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team falls to Ohio Northern University, 67-55, today (Saturday, January 14, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the ONU Sports Center.

With its win, ONU improved to 13-3 overall and remained in second place in the OAC at 7-2.  With its loss, B-W fell to 9-7 overall and 4-5 in the OAC.  This was the final game of the first half of the OAC regular season.


In addition for ONU, senior forward Kara Dysert added 12 points. The Yellow Jackets were led by junior All-OAC forward Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) scored 12 points. In addition, sophomore guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville/
Senior) and sophomore center Natalia Simovic (Seven Hills/ Parma Normandy) each contributed 10 points.

Ohio Northern opened the scoring when Yoder connected on a jumper at 19:35 for a 2-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets would quickly respond when Carpenter buried a shot at 19:17 to tie it at 2-2.


The Polar Bears went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to extend their lead to 11-12 when junior guard Morgan Dumbaugh connected on a jump shot at 16:23 remaining.  Yoder sparked the run with four points. B-W went on its own 5-0 run to cut into the lead and make it 11-7 when Simovic made a jump shot and

Lairson canned a three-pointer at the 13:53 mark.

Ohio Northern the outscored B-W 11-2 and built a 13-point lead at 22-9 at 8:54 before the Yellow Jackets started their comeback on a layup by Lairson.  B-W would outscore the Polar Bears 15-8 the remainder of the half and cut the lead to four points at 28-24 on a jumper in the paint by Simovic at the 1:20.  Ohio Northern would score the last points of the half on a jumper by Yoder with 58 seconds to secure a 30-24 lead at the intermission.


B-W opened the second half on a 5-2 run following a pair of free throws from Lairson and a three-pointer from Carpenter to cut the score to 32-29 at 17:51, but Ohio Northern went on a 9-2 run to push its lead back to 10 points at 41-31 when junior point guard Katie Mangos made a jumper at 12:57.


The teams battled back and forth with the Polar Bears building their largest lead of 14 points  at 8:06 when sophomore guard Sara Kocian made two free throws.  B-W got as close as six points at 61-53 on a three-pointer by Carpenter with 1:15 remaining.  ONU then outscored B-W 6-2 to end the contest.


The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, January 21 when they will host Pioneers of Marietta College in OAC game in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m.  Fans can live on campus radio station WBWC 88.3 FM "The Sting" or via the internet at www.wbwc.com.  The pregame show starts 15 minutes prior to tipoff.


Media and fans are reminded that the B-W will televise two men's and women's basketball doubleheaders on regional cable network SportsTime Ohio. The games are the January 28 doubleheader versus Wilmington and the February 18 twinbill versus Ohio Northern University. B-W has broadcast more of its athletics events on regional cable TV than any other Division III school.
