Once Teammates, Rohrbach and Miller Are Opponents

By Zach Baker - Sports Editor, The Tiffin Advertiser-Tribune

TIFFIN, OHIO -- The two were part of a program that, at its peak, was the top-ranked team in the state and a program that won two district titles.

Megan Miller and Lexi Rohrbach were classmates and teammates at Columbian, and were a big part (along with Jill Stein, now at BG) of the post play on back-to-back undefeated regular seasons.

But last week, the two found themselves on opposite sides of an Ohio Athletic Conference contest between Baldwin-Wallace and Heidelberg.

Rohrbach is in her second season at B-W, while Miller is a transfer to Heidelberg from Owens, where she played last season.

It was the second time the pair met on the college court. Back in December, Miller and Rohrbach's teams faced off in Berea, a game the Yellow Jackets won.

In the second game between the two Jan. 25 at Seiberling Gymnasium, B-W won again, despite a strong first half from HU that left the game tied at the half.

It was a fairly big game for Rohrbach, who finished with 11 points and seven rebounds in 14 minutes, just a few blocks from where she played high school ball. Miller started for Heidelberg, making a 3-pointer in the second half to give Heidelberg a brief lead. They were Miller's only points as the Yellow Jackets won, 67-48.

Rohrbach came off the bench in the win, and her coach - Wynford graduate Cheri Harrer - said the sophomore has had a nice season.

"Lexi's been pretty solid for us all year long," Harrer said. "She's deceptively quick, and she just gets in there and keeps those big arms up and makes good things happen. We're really proud of her and we think she's gonna get even better."

Rohrbach has played in all 19 games for the Yellow Jackets this season, each time coming off the bench. She's averaging about five points and four rebounds a game.

Harrer said Rohrbach has made a specific improvement from a season ago, when she averaged better than six points and five rebounds a game. Even though her numbers aren't as high this year, the coach said the 5-foot-11 forward has become a better player

"I think she now knows what to expect," Harrer said. "She's definitely gotten better, she's been more solid on the boards, and offensively she's stayed more aggressive and I don't know if you notice, but she's going right now and not just left. And that's a big improvement. People know that she wants to go to that left hand, but if she can go to that right hand too, it's a lot tougher to stop her."

Though she was a starter for much of her TC career, Rohrbach has embraced her reserve role.

"I like coming off the bench more," she said. "I like being the spark and coming off with energy."

Like her coach, Rohrbach said her game has improved.

"I've definitely become a better defender," she said. "I had to learn how to play defense, because in high school I was already bigger than everybody; now I'm the same size."

As for Miller, the 5-foot-10 guard has had a strong start with HU, averaging better than eight points and four rebounds a game. Miller said it has been different for her, going up against a former teammate.

"It was a little weird at first, but we've already played each other at B-W," Miller said. "So, I mean, it was good. (Rohrbach) came back home for Tiffin and all her fans were here, and everyone from Tiffin Columbian was here (last Wednesday). It was a good little competition going on."

Miller and Rohrbach weren't the only local products on the floor that night.

B-W sophomore Melissa Hoffbauer came into the game against Heidelberg, playing three minutes. The Buckeye Central graduate didn't score. She's played in only four games this season, but Harrer was very positive about the wing/forward.

"Melissa just works so darn hard. What a great kid," she said. "She's a 4.0 student, and is probably our hardest worker day in and day out in practice and games. She just busts her tail. She's still catching up in some of the skills needed for the college level, but she's just a great kid, and you always want a lot of great kids in your program and she is definitely that."
