Men's Basketball Team Falls To Marietta, 67-63, in OAC Action

BEREA, OHIO -  Marietta junior forward Kevin Knab scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Marietta College men's basketball team defeated Baldwin Wallace University, 67-63, today (Saturday, January 22, 2011) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.  The win kept Marietta in first place in the OAC.

In addition to Knab for the Pioneers, now 15-2 overall and 8-2 in the OAC,  junior forward Trevor Halter scored 17 points, all in the second half and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the foul line, including the final six attempts in the last 20 seconds of the game.  With his 17 points, Halter reached over 1,000 points for his career.  BW, now 7-10 overall and 3-7 in the OAC, was led by junior All-OAC guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria) with a team high 14 points and five rebounds. In addition, freshman forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) had 10 points and two rebounds. The Yellow Jackets have lost three straight.

In the first half, Marietta jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Knab had a put back layup at the 19:37 mark.  BW squared action up at 2-2 but Marietta grew a 14-8 lead at the 13:26 on a three pointer from Andrew Seaman.  Marietta continued to build a lead as high as 14 points, led by the solid play of Knab.  The Yellow Jackets continued to fight back when sophomore guard Ben Umbel (Poland/Seminary) scored a basket at the 3:55 mark making the score 27-20. 

BW used a 14-0 run to tie the game at 27-27 when Cabbil  made a layup at the 2:18 mark.  Marietta ended their nearly five minute drought with a three pointer from Crader at the 1:11 mark.  The deficit reached five points until senior guard Taylor Roth (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) hit a three pointer in the final seconds, bringing the score to 32-30 to end the half.

 In the second half, Marietta used a 7-2 run to bring the score to 39-34 with 17:37 to play.  Freshman forward Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) answered the Marietta scoring with two consecutive three pointers cutting the deficit to 41-40. 
BW got their first lead of the game, 34-34, at the 18:59 mark when Payne connected on a layup.  Marietta used a 7-0 run to lead 39-34 with 17:37 remaining.  Both teams kept exchanging leads until Marietta used a 6-0 run to lead 51-46 at the 9:55 mark. 
BW answered with a 7-2 run to tie the score at 53-53 when sophomore forward Sean Rothermel (Delaware/Hayes) made a layup with 6:16 remaining.  The Yellow Jackets expanded their run to 11-2 run on a pair of Zane Meeder free throws and a jump shot at the 4:10 mark. 
Marietta's Halter hit a three pointer to regain the lead for the Pioneers at 59-57 with 1:39 remaining.  Knab battled in the post and connected on a layup to build the lead to 61-57 with 47 seconds remaining.   Halter made two free throws to extend the lead to 63-59 with 20 seconds remaining. 

Cabbil drove to the basket and was fouled  and answered with two free throws cutting the deficit to 63-61 with 14 seconds remaining.  Halter made two more free throws with nine seconds remaining to extend  the lead to 65-61.  Cabbil quickly answered on a layup with four seconds remaining.  Halter returned to the foul line making both attempts  to put the game out of reach.
 

The BW men return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 26 when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to play OAC rival Heidelberg University in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, or via the WBW Internet web site at www.wBW.com


In addition, two BW women's and men's basketball doubleheaders will be telecast on SportsTime Ohio this winter. The games are next Saturday, January 29, versus Wilmington College and the Third Annual Take a Kid to the Game Day doubleheader versus Ohio Northern University on Saturday, February 19, 2011.
