Men's Basketball Team Falls to Wilmington, 75-68, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -  Junior forward Tyler White scored 24 points as the Wilmington College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference foe Baldwin Wallace University, 75-68, today (Saturday, January 29, 2011) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.  This was the nightcap of a women's and men's doubleheader.

With its win, Wilmington improved  to 8-11 overall and 4-8 in the OAC. In addition to White for Wilmington, sophomore guard Brandon Candella had 15 points. BW is now 7-12 overall and 3-9 in the OAC and was led by freshman guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) with 16 points, freshman forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) had 15, sophomore forward Sean Rothermel (Delaware/ Hayes) had a career-high 13 and junior All-OAC point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria) had 12.

In the first half, the Quakers jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Cabbil scored on a layup at 17:17 to slose the gap to 5-2. After a 4-0 Wilmington run made the score 9-2, Payne  made a jump shot to close to 9-4.

Wilmington continued to grow its lead to 16-4 when White grabbed an offensive rebound and in the same motion slammed it home at the 12:56 mark. The Quaker lead grew to a first stanza high of 16 points at 20-4 before the Yellow Jackets stung back for a 6-0 run to close to 20-10 when Cabbil made a layup at 7:58.

After Wilmington rebuilt its lead to 24-10, BW went on a 9-0 run to close back to 24-19 at the 3:57 mark when Rothermel scored.

Undaunted, the Quakers came back with a 6-0 run of their own to rebuild the lead to 11 points at 30-19 with 2:00 left when White scored.  Wilmington closed its 10-0 run with four more points to lead at halftime, 34-19.

In the second half, Wilmington opened by outscoring BW 7-4 to build its biggest lead at that point at 40-24 when junior guard Antonio Bowman made one of two free throws at 16:54. The Yellow Jackets came right back with a 6-0 run to close to 40-30 when Cabbil made a driving layup at 15:02. 

 

BW kept up the pressure and closed to seven points at 52-45 when Krakowiak made a three-pointer at 5:43, but on the ensuing possession Wilmington freshman guard Klarke Ransome scored, was fouled and made the free throw to push the lead back to 10 points at 55-45.

After another Ransome basket at 3:31 made it a 12-point game at 57-45, but BW wasn't done.  It closed to four points at 65-61 with 1:05 left when Krakowiak canned a triple. After the teams traded points, the Quakers made three of four foul shots to lead 70-63. Payne then followed with a long three-pointer with 25.4 seconds to cut the lead to 70-66.

Candella made it a six-point game at 72-66 with 22.8 left when he made two foul shots. A Cabbil layup again cut it to four at 72-68 with 18 ticks left. A pair of Bowman free throws made it six points again at 74-68 with 14 seconds left and one by Candella with four second left ended the scoring.

Rothermel was named the Al Sirat Grotto Player of the Game for BW while White took home the same award for Wilmington.

Today's game was taped and will be televised by SportsTime Ohio tonight at 8:00 p.m.  The BW versus Wilmington women's game will air at 6:00 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, February 2 when they host OAC-rival Otterbein University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.  In addition, fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, or via the WBW Internet web site at www.wBW.com
