Men's Basketball Team Defeats Waynesburg (Pa.) University, 86-76

BEREA, OHIO -  Freshman forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Waynesburg (Pa.) University, 86-76, tonight (Wednesday, December 29, 2010) in a non-conference clash in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea, Ohio.  This was the first meeting between the two schools featuring the nickname, Yellow Jackets.

With its win, BW improved to 4-7 overall and snapped a three-game losing skid. With its loss, Waynesburg falls to 4-6 overall and was led by junior forward Jeff Young with 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  

In addition to Payne, BW had freshman guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Holy Name) score 16 points, including four-of-seven shooting from three-point range, senior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) had 13 points and junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) had 11 points.

In the first half, BW opened the scoring on a layup by Payne to take a 2-0 lead. The game was tied on five different occasions with the last coming at 10-10 at the 12:53 mark. Waynesburg then used a 6-0 run to jump out to a 16-10 lead.

BW kept chipping away at the lead, trailing 18-17 when sophomore forward Sean Rothermel (Delaware/ Hayes) made a layup at the 8:35 mark. After trailing for almost nine minutes of action, BW regained the lead at 29-28 on a layup by Meeder at the 3:05 mark of the first stanza.

BW then outscored Waynesburg 9-2 for the remainder of the first half to lead, 38-30, at the intermission.

In the second half,  Waynesburg got as close as three points at 47-44 with 14:30 remaining when junior forward Lou Galante hit a three-pointer.  
 
BW then outscored the visiting Yellow Jackets 24-9 during the next nine minutes to increas its lead to a game-high of 18 points at 71-53 on a three-pointer by Krakowiak at the 5:22 mark. The closest Waynesburg would get after that point was six points at 82-76 with 41 seconds left, but BW would make its final four foul shots, two each by Meeder and Cabbil, to close out the game and earn the victory

BW will return to action on January 3 and 4 when it travels to Kissimmee, Florida to take part in the ECAC Holiday at the Kissimmee Civic Center. The Jackets will take on Vassar (N.Y.) College on Monday, January 3 at 12:00 noon and then will face the University of Massachusetts-Boston on Tuesday, January 4 at 12:00 noon. The next home game is on Saturday, January 8 when it faces Capital University in the second game of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader at 4:00 p.m.

In addition, two BW women's and men's basketball doubleheaders will be telecast on SportsTime Ohio this winter. The games are the January 29, 2011 twinbill versus Wilmington College and the Third Annual Take a Kid to the Game Day doubleheader versus Ohio Northern University on February 19, 2011.
