Men's Basketball Team Falls To Muskingum, 71-68, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO - Junior All-OAC guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/Senior) scored a career-high tying 20 points  as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team fell to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum University, 71-68, today (Saturday, December 18, 2010) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.

With the loss, BW is now 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the OAC.   Muskingum improved to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the OAC and were led by junior forward Josh Brindley with a game-high 24 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

In the first half, the Muskies opened the scoring, 2-1, on a layup by junior forward Josh Brindley at the 19:23.  The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 2-1 when freshman forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) connected on one of two free throws at 19:08.  Muskingum then went on a 5-0 run before Cabbil hit the first basket of the game for BW at 16:28 to cut the lead to 7-3.

BW cut the lead back to one point, 12-11, when freshman guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland/Senior) buried a three-pointer with 10:53 remaining in the opening period.  The Muskies then used a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 18-11 at the 7:51 mark.  The Yellow Jackets cut back into the lead, 18-14, when Cabbil converted the traditional three point play with 7:26 left.

BW tied the game at 18-18 when freshman guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) nailed a jumper at 6:17.   The Yellow Jackets took their first lead of the game 20-18 on a layup by junior guard Scott Voiers (Westlake/Lutheran West) with 5:39 remaining.

The two teams went back and forth for the remainder of the opening stanza with BW holding a 32-31 advantage at the intermission.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets opened the scoring when Krakowiak buried a three-pointer at 19:35.   The two teams exchanged baskets before Fairhurst connected on his second three-pointer of the game to extend the lead to 45-41 with 13:27 remaining.  The Muskies regained the lead at 50-49 on a pair of free throws by senior forward Wade Litt at 8:39.  It marked their first lead since 2:30 remaining in the first half. 

BW tied the game, 54-54, on a three-pointer from sophomore guard Brandon Schmidt (Wellington) at 6:33.  The Yellow Jackets regained the lead, 56-54, on a layup by senior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa. /Fairview) with 5:50 remaining.   Muskingum tied the game again at 56 on a pair of free throws by junior forward Kyle Clinedinst at the 5:22 mark. 

BW then went on a 5-0 run when Cabbil converted his second three point play of the game and Meeder hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 61-56 at 4:37.  The Muskies cut the lead to two points, 61-59, when Brindley connected on three of four free throws with the last coming at 2:34.

Muskingum tied the game at 61 on a layup by junior guard JJ Armstrong at 1:52.  The Muskies regained the lead, 64-61 on a three point play by Brindley with 1:20 left.  Sophomore forward Seth Howard extended the lead to four points as he split a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left.   BW cut the lead to one, 65-64 on a three by Meeder at the 26 second mark. 

Muskingum made it a three point lead, 67-64, at 22 seconds on a pair of free throws by Clinedinst.  The Muskies added to their lead, 68-64, when Brindley hit one of two free with 12 seconds left.  The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to two points, 68-66, on a fast break layup by Cabbil with just seconds left in the game.   Muskingum made it a three-point game once again, 69-66, with five seconds left as Brindley hit one free throw.   BW made it a one point lead on a pair of free throws by Cabbil with 2.6 seconds left.  Muskingum sealed the game as Clinedinst hit two free throws with 2.4 seconds remaining in the game.   The Yellow Jackets missed a three-pointer by Krakowiak as time expired.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 21 when they host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Ursprung Gym at 7:00 p.m. Fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, or via the WBW Internet web site at www.wBW.com.  Following that game, BW is idle until hosting a non-league game versus Waynesburg (Pa.) University in Berea on Dec. 29 at 7:00 p.m.

In addition, two Yellow Jacket women's and men's basketball doubleheaders will be telecast on SportsTime Ohio this winter. The games are the January 29, 2011 twinbill versus Wilmington College and the Third Annual Take a Kid to the Game Day doubleheader versus Ohio Northern University on February 19, 2011.
