Men's Basketball Team Loses to Marietta, 83-61, in Marietta

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior forward Kevin Knab scored 22 points as the Marietta College men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin Wallace University, 83-61, today (Saturday, December 4, 2010) on Fenton Court in the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse in Marietta, Ohio. With its win, Marietta improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.

In addition to Knab for Marietta, junior guard Trevor Halter had 18 points. For BW, now 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the OAC, freshman guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Holy Name) led the way with a career-high 15 points and sophomore forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) had 11.


In the first half, Marietta scored the first six points for a 6-0 lead at the 17:38 mark when junior guard Joe Puch made a layup. BW got right back in the game by outscoring Marietta 10-4 to close to within 10-8 with 13:37 left when Krakowiak buried his second three-pointer of the game.


BW finally tied the game at 17-17 with 8:01 left when Ameen made a layup. Undaunted, the Pioneers came right back with a 6-0 run to retake a six-point lead at 23-17 when Knab made a layup. the lead grew to seven points at 27-20 before Krakowiak put the Jackets on his back and scored seven striaght points to lead a 7-2 run that made the score 29-27 with 2:40 left in the half. Then Marietta outscored BW 6-2 to build a 35-30 lead before senior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) canned a three-pointer with 40 seconds left to make the score 35-33 at halftime.


In the second half, MC came out on a 6-0 run to take a 41-33 lead with 18:08 left when Knab made a jump shot. The Pioneers then built an 12-point lead at 47-35 before a Meeder foul shot at 14:45 made the score 47-36. The lead grew to 14 points at 50-36 when BW went on a 7-0 run as sophomore guard Matt Triana (North East, Pa./ North East) made a three-pointer at 12:51, freshman center Aaron Selmek (Delaware/ Columbus St. Francis deSales) made a layup at 12:26 and sophomore forward Scott Branchick (Mentor) made a layup at 11:48 to trim the Pioneer advantage to 50-43.


Marietta then outscored the Yellow Jackets 11-5 and build its lead back to 13 points and take a 61-48 lead at 9:55 when sophomore guard JJ Martin drilled a three-pointer.  The lead then grew to 14 points at 61-47 at the 9:55 mark when Martin canned another trey.  The closest BW would get after that point was nine points at 63-54 when sophomore guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) made a jumper at the 7:32 mark.  The Pioneers closed out the game on a 20-7 run to make a fairly close game look like a runaway.


The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, December 11 when they travel to Wilmington, Ohio to play in a women's and then men's doubleheader against Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College at 4:00 p.m. The Yellow Jacket and Quaker women meet at 2:00 p.m. Fans can listen to all of the action from each game live on either campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, or via the WBW Internet web site at www.wBW.com.


In addition, two Yellow Jacket women's and men's basketball doubleheaders will be telecast on SportsTime Ohio this winter. The games are the January 29, 2011 twinbill versus Wilmington College and the Third Annual Take a Kid to the Game Day doubleheader versus Ohio Northern University on February 19, 2011.
