Men's Basketball Defeats Heidelberg, 86-75, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) scored a game-high 18 points and passed for six assists as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Heidelberg University, 86-75, tonight (Wednesday, December 1, 2010) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.  This was the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for each team.

In addition to Cabbil for BW, now 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the OAC, senior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) had 17 points and four three-pointers, sophomore forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) had 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds and freshman forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick), this week's OAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week, had 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.  For Heidelberg, now 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the OAC, sophomore guard Dane Givner led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds, junior forward Darion Capers had 16 points and senior forward Kyle Tuley had 12 points.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the 19:38 mark when Ameen scored on a layup. After the Student Princes tied the score at 2-2, BW built leads of 6-2, 9-6 and 11-8 before the Heidelberg tied the score at 11-11 and then 13-13 when Tuley made a pair of foul shots at the 14:41 mark.

BW regained the lead at 16-13 with 14:25 left when junior guard Matt Triana (North East, Pa./ North East) made a three-pointer.  Undaunted, the Student Princes went on a 6-0 run to take the lead at 19-16 when sophomore guard Shina Giwa canned a three-pointer. After Heidelberg had the lead at 23-20, BW scored five straight points and retook the lead at 25-23 when Ameen made one of two foul shots at 7:07.

After Heidelberg tied the score at 25-25, BW again went into the lead at 28-25 when Payne made a conventional three-point play at 4:44.  The Student Princes came right back with a foul shot by junior forward Zane Wildermuth and a jumper by freshman guard Lee Renner at 4:01 left the game tied at 28-28. Heidelberg then regained the lead at 29-28 when Wildermuth canned one of two foul shots at 3:43.

BW regained the lead at 32-29 when Meeder canned a three-pointer, was fouled and then converted the foul shot for a four-point play. The lead grew to 34-29 when Cabbil made a steal and a layup. Then following a Student Prince basket, Meeder canned another three-pointer at the 2:07 mark for BW's largest lead at 37-31. Heidelberg then scored six straight points to tie the score at 37-37 with 26 seconds left when Tuley made a jumper. Payne, who scored 12 first half points to lead BW, then gave the Yellow Jackets a halftime lead at 39-37 when he made a layup with three seconds left.

In the second half, Heidelberg gained the lead at 43-41 before Meeder canned his third trey of the game for BW at 17:49 for a 44-43 Yellow Jacket lead.  Again, the Student Princes regained the lead at 45-44 but BW came right back with a layup from Ameen at 16:43 and a three-pointer by Cabbil at 15:59 for a 49-45 lead.  The lead grew to five points at 55-50 with 13:15 left when freshman center Aaron Selmek (Delaware/ Columbus St. Francis DeSales) made a jumper. After another Student Prince basket, Cabbil gave BW a six-point bulge at 58-52 when Cabbil made another trey.

Heidelberg came right back with four straight points to get within 58-56 before Cabbil made a layup and added a foul shot for a 61-56 lead with 11:20 left. A Selmek jumper at 10:49 then gave BW its largest advantage at 63-56.  After Heidelberg closed to 63-59 when junior forward Darion Capers made two foul shots at 9:26, BW regained its seven-point lead at 66-59 when Triana made a jumper at 7:54. Then Ameen gave BW its largest advantage at 68-59 with 7:05 left when he made two foul shots.  After Heidelberg closed to 72-68 with 5:30 left when junior guard Quintin Aden Jr. made a jumper, BW scored four straight points at build a 76-68 lead at 4:30 when sophomore guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) made a layup.

The Yellow Jackets regained their nine-point lead at 79-70 with 4:05 left when Meeder canned hit fourth three-pointer of the game. The closest Heidelberg would get after that point was 80-75.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, December 4 when they travel to Marietta, Ohio for an OAC game against the Marietta College Pioneers on Fenton Court at 3:00 p.m. Fans can listen to all of the action from that game live on either campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, or via the WBW Internet web site at www.wBW.com.  The next home men's basketball game is on Saturday, Dec. 18 against Muskingum University at 3:00 p.m.

In addition, two Yellow Jacket women's and men's basketball doubleheaders will be telecast on SportsTime Ohio this winter. The games are the January 29, 2011 twinbill versus Wilmington College and the Third Annual Take a Kid to the Game Day doubleheader versus Ohio Northern University on February 19, 2011.
