BW Volleyball Splits a Pair of Matches in Season Opener

BEXLEY, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team split a pair of matches at the season opening Capital/Otterbein Classic in the Capital Center.
 
The Yellow Jackets opened the tournament by falling in straight sets to Maryville (Tenn.) College by scores of 26-28, 16-25 and 17-25.  In the second match of the night, BW defeated Kenyon College in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-16, 25-14
 
Offensively, BW was led by senior middle hitter Markema Winters (Akron/Firestone) and senior right side hitter Alayna Chlad (Kent/Roosevelt) each with 12 kills.  Winters had all of her kills against Kenyon and Chlad had six in each match.  Freshman outside hitter Melissa Metz (Medina /Our Lady of the Elms) added eight kills, including six in the match against Maryville.
 
Defensively, sophomore libero Arlayna Newcomer (Norwalk/St. Paul) recorded 33 digs and Metz added 16, including 12 against Kenyon.
 
BW closes out the Capital/Otterbein Classic with a pair of matches on Saturday, August 30.  The Yellow Jackets play Buffalo State (N.Y.) University at 9:30 a.m. then Alma (Mich.) College at 12 p.m.
 
The 16th Annual Marcia French Memorial Invitational once again will be co-hosted by BW and Case Western Reserve University on on Friday and Saturday, September 5-6.
