BW Volleyball Wins Two on First day of HCAC/OAC Challenge

BLUFFTON, Ohio. – The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team won a pair of five set matches on the first day of competition of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and Ohio Athletic Conference Challenge hosted by Bluffton University in the Sommer Center.

The Yellow Jackets (11-6) opened the day by defeating Transylvania (Ky.) University by scores of 25-23, 17-25, 25-16, 10-25, 15-11.  BW then rallied to defeat Hanover (Ind.) College by scores of 19-25, 25-15, 10, 25, 26-24 and 15-11.

Freshmen outside hitter Lauryn Wright (Orrville) led the BW offensive attack with 20 kills, including a career-best 14 against Hanover.  Senior Academic All-OAC right side hitter Alayna Chlad (Kent/Roosevelt) recorded 16 kills and junior outside hitter Anna Miley (West Salem/Northwester) tallied 12.

Senior Katie Primeau (Pemberville/Eastwood) and sophomore Sydney Robinson (Silver Lake/Cuyahoga Falls) set up the offense.   Robinson led the way with 30 assists, including 18 against Hanover.  Primeau had 29 assists with 15 coming against Transylvania.

The Yellow Jacket defense had four players recorded double figures in kills led by sophomore libero Arlayna Newcomer (Norwalk/St. Paul) with 58, including 30 against Hanover.    Freshman outside hitter Melissa Metz (Medina/Our Lady of the Elms) was second with 17, including 24 against Transylvania.  Senior defensive specialist Paige Pileski (Elyria) tallied 27 digs and Miley contributed 14.

BW closes out competition on the second and final day of the HCAC and OAC Challenge on Saturday with matches against Bluffton and the College of Mount St. Joseph at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.   The Yellow Jackets then host cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University in a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 20 at 7:30 p.m.  Fans can follow the action live at http://tinyurl.com/mrgjvzl.
