Women’s Volleyball Falls to Heidelberg in Five Sets

BEREA, Ohio - The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team faced Heidelberg University in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center for an Ohio Athletic Conference match. The Yellow Jackets (11-10, 2-4 OAC) fell to the Student Princes (7-16, 2-4 OAC) in five sets by final scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 18-25, and 14-16.

SUMMARY

BW earned the early jump in set one, 17-9, before the Student Princes stormed back to close the gap to two points, forcing a home team timeout. The Yellow Jackets also jumped out to a 20-17 advantage before Heidelberg went up 23-22 on BW. Two kills by freshman outside hitter Gabby Schlecht (Naperville, Ill./North) put the Yellow Jackets up one before an error by the Student Princes closed set one, 25-23.

The Yellow Jackets earned a slight 16-14 lead in set two, forcing a Heidelberg timeout. With the score tied 19-19, two straight points by the Student Princes earned them the late advantage. BW closed the gap to one point, but Heidelberg scored five of the next seven to claim set two, 25-22. 

BW got out to a hot 8-0 advantage in the third set. Heidelberg tallied five unanswered points of their own before tying the game at 12-12. With the Student Princes up one point (16-15), BW outscored the away team 6-2 to grab a 21-18 lead late. Heidelberg went on to tie the set at 21-21, before a kill from sophomore outside hitter Sydney Simonson (Sullivan/Black River) earned BW the edge at 24-23, as the Yellow Jackets took set three 25-23.

The Student Princes carried the momentum in set four, getting out to an early 7-3 lead and a commanding 16-9 lead, exhausting both of BW's timeouts. Heidelberg took set four 25-18, forcing the tie-breaking fifth set.

Heidelberg went up 4-0 to start set five before BW brought the score to 8-6, trailing by just two points. A kill by sophomore outside hitter Sam Rueda (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) kept the score within two before the Student Princes went up 10-7, forcing BW to its first timeout. Earning three straight points late in the set to tie the game at 14-14, Heidelberg took its second timeout. The Student Princes rattled off a kill and an error by the home team clinched the match for Heidelberg, 3-2.

15 - Sophomore right side hitter Allison Weiner (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) led the team with 15 kills and added four digs

The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday, October 22 as the team travels to Westerville to take on Otterbein University in another OAC showdown. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m. inside the Rike Center.
