BW Women’s Basketball Falls to Rival John Carroll

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference game to cross-town rival John Carroll University, 62-52, in a inside the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (12-4, 7-2 OAC), who has won nine of its last 11 games, snapped its five-game winning streak as well as its seven OAC winning streak. John Carroll (15-1, 8-1 OAC), who has won nine straight games, remains in a first place tie with Ohio Northern University.

The Yellow Jackets was led by sophomore guard Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) with 10 points.

The Blue Streaks were led by sophomore guard Katlyn Spahar with a game-high 26 points and senior guard Emily Taylor tallied 11 points.

After the game was tied 5-5, John Carroll went on a 10-3 run to take a 15-8 lead on a jumper by Spahar at the 9:20 mark. BW used a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to 15-12 on a pair of free throws by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) at 8:24. The Blue Streaks responded with 13-6 run to take a 10 point lead at 28-18 on a layup by Spahar at the 1:36 mark. The Yellow Jackets trailed 30-21 at intermission.

BW opened the half on a 17-8 run to tie the game at 38-38 on jumper by Smolik at the 13:12 mark. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 9-3 run to take a 47-41 lead on a three-pointer by junior guard Erin Allen (Girard, Pa.) at 10:05. The Blue Streaks closed out the game on a 21-5 run.

BW returns to action this Saturday, January 24 when it travels to New Concord for an OAC game against Muskingum University on Performance Court at 3 p.m. The Yellow Jackets will host a pair of OAC games next week as they host the University of Mount Union on Wednesday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m. and Marietta College on Saturday, January 31 at 3 p.m.
