BW Women Beat Heidelberg, 82-64, in Tiffin; Stay in First in OAC

TIFFIN, Ohio – Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC forward Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) scored a game-high 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds and passed for four assists as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team won its fourth straight game and ninth in its last 10 outings as it defeated Heidelberg University, 82-64, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Seiberling Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets (16-4, 11-2 OAC) remain in a first place tie in the OAC with Ohio Northern University and John Carroll University. In addition to Smolik for BW, junior forward Alissa Munro (Mansfield/ Lexington) scored 16 points and senior All-OAC guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) had 13.  The victory was BW's 26th straight versus Heidelberg dating back to January 20, 2004. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 56-22, and earned a season-sweep of the Student Princes.

Keys in the wins for the Yellow Jackets were making 12 of 24 shots from three-point range for 50 percent and making 22 of 25 foul shots for 84%.

Heidelberg (8-12, 6-7 OAC) had four players score double figures. Senior guard Paige Ricketts and junior center Marisa Liburdi each had a team-high 12 points.   

In the first half, there were nine lead changes and nine ties.

The Yellow Jackets led 3-0 at 19:13 when sophomore point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) canned a three-pointer. Heidelberg outscored BW 10-3 to take its largest lead of the half at 10-6 at 14:11 when junior center Marissa Liburdi made a layup. BW had three other three-point leads with the last at 30-27 at 5:40 when junior forward Ally Dehart (Beaver, Pa./ Beaver) made two foul shots. The game was tied 41-41 at the intermission.

In the second half, Heielberg had a four point lead with the last at 45-41 at 18:32. BW outscored the Student Princes 12-6 to take the lead for good at 53-51 when junior guard Allyson Helleis (Rocky River) made a three-pointer. BW continued to outscore the Student Princes and built their largest Yellow Jacket lead at 18 points with 28 seconds left when Munro canned a triple. Overall, BW outscored Heidelberg, 41-23, in the second stanza.


The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, February 7 when BW hosts Otterbein University on "Take a Kid to the Game" in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 3 p.m.
