Baldwin-Wallace Softball Team Splits Doubleheader at OAC Rival Marietta

MARIETTA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Sunday, April 3) against OAC rival Marietta College at Marietta Field.  The Pioneers won the first game by a score of 9-1 in six innings, while the Yellow Jackets came back to win the nightcap, 4-2, behind a complete game from freshman right-hander Justina Wise (New London).

With the split, the Yellow Jackets are now 10-4 overall and 2-2 in the OAC and play a home doubleheader tomorrow, Monday, April 4 at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.  With its split, the Pioneers are now 13-6 overall and 3-1 in the OAC.


In the first game, Marietta jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring a run in the first inning and adding three more in the second.  The Pioneers extended the lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning with another pair of runs and managed to gain a 7-0 advantage going into the sixth before BW scored its lone run on a RBI from senior center fielder Tanya Davis (Hinckley/Medina Highland).  Marietta added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to the end the game.
 

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets could only muster two hits off of Marietta starter Chelsea Chaffin as senior first baseman Katrina Resek (Strongsville) and freshman left fielder Ashley Elber (Huron/Edison) both went one-for-three.  


On the mound, junior right-hander Sarah Baker (Mentor/Lake Catholic) started the contest and lasted two innings, yielding four runs on seven hits.  In relief, senior Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky) tossed the last three innings giving up five runs on seven hits.  Baker fell to 4-2 on the year with the loss.


In the second game, B-W jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Elber knocked in Resek with a RBI double to right field.  After adding another run in the third off of Elber's second RBI, Marietta came back with two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2-2.  However, the Jackets would answer with one run in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the victory.  


Offensively, Elber led the way by going 3-for-3 with two RBI, a double, walk and run scored.  Freshman shortstop Lauren Feciuch (Kent/Field) was also 3-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI.  Batting in the leadoff spot, Resek was 2-for-4 with a run scored.  


On the mound, Wise scattered seven hits over seven innings while only allowing two earned runs.  She struck out six and walked two Pioneer batters.  With the win, Wise improved her record to 5-2 on the season.  


After facing Wooster on Monday in Berea, B-W travels to Meadville, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, April 5 to play a non-league twinbill versus Allegheny College at 3:30 p.m.
