Baldwin-Wallace Softball Team Sweeps an OAC Twinbill from Heidelberg in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Heidelberg University today (Thursday, April 21) at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea.  The game was origionally scheduled to be played on Tuesday but was postponed due to inclement weather.

The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 7-1, and captured the nightcap, 8-1.  The Yellow Jackets are now 19-8 overall and 7-5 in the OAC.  The Student Princes are now 21-11 overall and 3-9 in the OAC.

In the first game, B-W gained a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning as freshman leftfielder Ashley Elber (Huron/ Milan Edison) singled with one out, moved to second when senior Academic All-American CFTanya Davis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) walked and scored when freshman designated hitter Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/ Field) singled her home.

After Heidelberg tied the game with a run in the top of the second, B-W took the lead for good at 3-1 with two more in the bottom of the second. After one out, freshman shortstop Lauren Feciuch (Kent/ Field) singled and then moved to third on a single by senior 1B Katrina Resek (Strongsville). A walk to Elber then loaded the bases. Feciuch scored on a Davis groundout to make it 2-1, and Murray drove home Resek with a single.

In the fourth, the lead grew to 5-1 when Resek walked and Elber followed by smashing her third homerun of the season over the left-center field fence.  B-W added its final two runs in the sixth when Elber reached on an error, moved to third when Davis doubled and scored when Murray reached on an error. Davis then scored after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.

At the plate for the Yellow Jackets, Murray led the way by going 3-for-4 with three runs batted-in. Elber andDavis also had a pair of base hits. Elber also scored three times and drove in two and Davis scored once and had an RBI.  On the mound for B-W, freshman Justina Wise (New London) pitched a complete-game six-hitter, allowed one runs (earned), struck out four and did not walk a Heidelberg batter as she improve to 10-4 overall. The complete-game was her ninth of the season.

In the second game, B-W gained a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Resek walked, Elber singled and Davis reached via a fielder's choice with Resek out at third base. Murray then stepped to the plate and hammered her team-leading sixth homer of the season with Elber and Davis scoring in front of her.  The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 4-0 in the second when Resek reached base via a fielder's choice and later scored via a wild pitch.

After Heidelberg scored a run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-1, B-W manufactured three runs in the fifth to increase its lead to six runs at 7-1. In the inning, Murray singled and later scored on a passed ball, junior 2B Katie Finley (Vermilion) reached on a fielder's choice and later scored via a wild pitch and freshman OFKatie Carabin (Norwalk/ St. Paul) pinch ran and both stole a base and scored.

B-W scored its final run in the sixth as Davis singled, moved to third when Murray reached on an error and scored when freshman 3B Kaity Mullen (Avon Lake) also reached via a Student Prince error.

At the plate for the Yellow Jackets, MurrayDavis and Elber led the way as each player had two hits. Davisand Murray each scored twice and Mullen had two RBI and Murray three via her three-run clout in the first frame. On the mound for B-W, Murray started and tossed a complete-game three-hitter as she allowed an unearned run, struck out a career-high 10 Heidelberg hitters and allowed three walks as she improved to 4-0 this season. The complete game was her fourth of the season.

B-W is back in action tomorrow, Friday, April 22 when it hosts OAC-foe Wilmington College for two games at the Fairgrounds Field at 1:00 p.m.
