Baldwin-Wallace Softball Team Sweeps Non-League Twinbill at Kenyon

GAMBIER, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team swept a non-league doubleheader with traditional rival Kenyon College today (Sunday, April 10, 2011) in Gambier, Ohio.  The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 9-3, and went on to capture the nightcap, 8-1.

With its sweep, the Yellow Jackets are now 14-5 overall and 3-3. Kenyon is now 6-16 overall and has lost 15 straight.

In the first game, the B-W offense pounded out 12 hits and exploded for six runs in the first inning and en route to building a 9-3 advatange until the Lords scored three times in the fifth.

The hitting attack was led b y senior centerfielder Tanya Davis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) who went 2-for-2 at the plate with a two-run homerun in the second inning and three runs batted-in.  Senior first baseman Katrina Resek (Strongsville) also had a good day as she was 2-for-4 with an RBI and her team-leading 11th stolen base. 

On the mound, freshman Justina Wise (New London) pitched a scoreless five and one-third innings, gave up six hits, struck out four and walked just one batter as she improved to 8-2 overall this season. Her eight victories also lead the team. . Sophomore Sally Sharp (Brighton, Mich./ Brighton) relieved Wise and finished the game. Ahe pitched one and two-third innings and gave up three runs on three hits in her second appearence of the season.

In the second game, the Yellow Jackets again scored early and often with one in the first, one in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth for a 7-0 lead before Kenyon scored in the fifth.  B-W added its final run in the sixth.

The offense was led by Davis and three freshmen, including catcher Samantha Brown (Kent/ Field), LF Katie Carabin (Norwalk/ St. Paul), and 3B Kaity Mullen (Avon Lake) as each player had two hits. Brown doubled in the second inning to drive in junior 2B Katie Finley (Vermilion) and then led off the fourth inning with a solo homerun, the first homerun of her career. Davis and Mullen each had one double and  Carabin had a RBI and a stolen base as well. Davis' double was a B-W school-record 46th of her fine career.

One the mound, freshman Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/ Field), pitched five innings and gave up one run on four hits and struck out five batters as she improved to 2-0 this season. Freshman Hayley Corso (Huron)relieved Murray and for the first appearence of her career and tossed two scoreless innings. She struck out two and surrendered just one base hit. 

B-W is back in action as it plays away OAC twinbills at the University of Mount Union on Tuesday, April 12 at 3:30 p.m. and at Ohio Northern University on Saturday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m. as well as a non-league doubleheader at Geneva (Pa.) College on Wednesday, April 13 at 3:30 p.m.
