Men’s Tennis Team Shuts Out Marietta, 9-0

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's tennis team shut out Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 9-0, today (Saturday, April 28, 2012) inside the Lou Higgins Center to remain unbeaten and set a school record for victories in a single season. The match was moved indoors due to inclement weather outside at the "Pop Collins" Courts. The Yellow Jackets also play another home match later this afternoon against Fransiscan University.

With its victory, the Yellow Jackets improve to a school-record 24-0 overall and end the OAC regular season at 9-0 to earn the number one seed for next week's OAC Tournament.  The 24 wins breaks the previous mark of 23, set by the 2004-2005 team that finished 23-2 overall.  In addition, today's shutout was the 14th this season and set another record.  Marietta dropped to 7-8 overall and 2-7 in the OAC and has to return to Berea this coming Tuesday to open OAC Tournament play against the Jackets at 3:30 p.m. at the Collins Courts.


B-W led 3-0 after the doubles competition and won all six singles matches to stretch its winning ways.


In singles play, they played pro-sets. Senior 3-time All-OAC and 2-time Acadmic All-OAC standout Alex Trzeciak (Avon Lake) won 8-1 at No.1, junior All-OAC standout Joe Horvath (North Royalton) won 8-4 at No.2, freshman Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) won 8-1 at No.3, senior Alexandre Bourdiaux (Paris, FRANCE) won 8-0 at No.4, junior No.5 player Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) won 8-1 and junior Tyler Beaton (Bemus Point, N.Y./ Maple Grove) won at No.6 by the score of 8-0.


With his victory at first singles, Trzeciak improves to 86-20 individually and is ranked second all-time in victories. Horvath's victory at No.2 was the 70th of his career and he improved to 70-8 overall. In addition, Bourdiaux, who transferred to B-W this winter, remains undefeated at No.4 at 21-0.


In doubles action, the No.1 duo of Trzeciak and Bourdiaux won by an 8-4 score, the No. 2 tandem of Horvath and Beaton won by a score of 8-0 and the No.3 team of Patterson and senior Taylor Long (Ashland/ Senior) won by an 8-2 score.


Long's victory at No.3 doubles was the 80th of his career, ranking him second all-time.  He has combined with a number of doubles partners for an 80-24 career mark.


The 2012 OAC Tournament begins on Tuesday with first round play. The Final Four will be held at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio on Friday and Saturday, May 4-5. The winner of the OAC tourney receives the OAC"s automatic berth in the 2012 NCAA Division III National Tournament.


On Tuesday, May 1, prior to B-W's first round OAC Tournament match in Berea, the College is going to recognize Coach Rector for his 400th career victory. He is the winningest men's tennis coach in OAC and Ohio collegiate history. The win versus Marietta was the 409th of his career and he is now 409-83 overall.
