GAMBIER, OHIO -- The Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin-Wallace College men's tennis team ended its historic season today (Saturday, May 12, 2012) with a 5-0 loss to number four-ranked Kenyon College (ITA national poll) in a second round match of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament at the David W. Jasper Tennis Center on the campus of Kenyon College.  This was the just the second NCAA Tournament match in school history for the Yellow Jackets.

In the NCAA Tournament, all matches are ended when the winning team reaches five team points regardless of the current progress of other matches still on court.   Each match will start with the three doubles matches and will continue with singles action until the winning five points are obtained.

With the loss, B-W ends its school-record setting season with a mark of 29-1 overall.  In addition to 29 wins being the school record, it also marked seventh time the Yellow Jackets have won 20 or more matches in a season. B-W also finished 9-0 during the OAC regular season to capture its third OAC regular season title (also in 2004 and 2005) and went on to win a fourth OAC Tournament title (others in 1992, 2004 and 2005).

"Making the national tournament was a new experience," said Head Coach Brian Rector.  "We now expect to win the OAC each season and move farther into the NCAA tournament for many years to come.

"I did not know what to expect at the beginning of the season," added Rector. "This team exceeded any of my expectations and had the best chemistry of any team I have ever coached.  The 29 wins is an impressive feat but it is not the standard we need to accomplish in the future.

"Our hope is to continue to play well against the outstanding competition we face in the OAC and to advance further in the NCAA Division III Tournament," continued Rector, who now has a 414-84 career record and is the winningest men's tennis coach in OAC and Ohio collegiate history."

The Lords improved to 21-4 on the season and advance to regional final to face the winner of the match between Kalamazoo (Mich.) College and No.21-ranked University of Mary Washington (Va.) on Sunday at 12:00 noon. The winner of the regional championship will advance to the elite eight on Monday, May 21 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.

"The seniors (Bourdiaux, Long and Trzeciak) kept everyone focused and together," commented Rector.  "A coach can only do so much motivating and without their leadership and drive we would not have made it this far.

Senior 3-time All-OAC and 2-time Academic All-OAC number one singles and doubles student-athlete Alex Trzeciak (Avon Lake) ended his season with a 26-6 record and a career-mark of 87-22 .  The 26 wins ties him for third all-time in wins in a single season and his 87 career victories ranks second all-time. Senior No.3 doubles standout Taylor Long (Ashland) finished the season with a 22-8 record and 84-9 in his career in doubles action. Senior No.4 singles and No.1 doubles player Alexandre Bourdiaux (Paris, France/ Lycee Saint Dominique) ended this season with a 24-1 singles record and ranks fifth all-time for wins in a season.

Others singles records were No.2 player Joe Horvath (North Royalton) at 28-2, freshman No.3 player Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) at 27-3, junior No.5 player Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) at 26-5 and junior No.6 player Tyler Beaton (Bemus Point, N.Y./ Maple Grove) at 20-3 overall.  Other doubles marks included Trzeciak and Bourdiaux at No.1 with a 21-5 mark, the No.2 duo of Horvath and Beaton were 20-5 and Long and Patterson were 14-5 overall.

"This was a special season," said Rector. "We will miss the leadership of Alex, Alexander and Taylor, but also know we return a very talented group of players and a solid group of recruits coming to campus who can challenge our upperclassmen. It continues to be exciting every year."
