Women's Indoor Track and Field Finishes Third in Season Opening OAC North Split

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's indoor track and field team opened up the 2018 season by placing third at the Ohio Athletic Conference North Split meet on the Harrison Dillard Track inside the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse.

The Yellow Jacket women placed third of five teams, scoring 121 points. Mount Union won on the women's side with a total of 202.5 points.

In the field events, sophomore thrower Brooke Buckhannon (Collins/Western Reserve) swept the throwing events with career-best throws of 40 feet, 11.75 inches in the shot put and 47'3.75" in the weight throw. Senior thrower Madeline Ziccardi (Cuyahoga Falls) was the runner-up in the weight throw with a career-best toss of 45'9.75" and also took fourth place in the shot put with a 37 6.75" throw.  Sophomore Breeanna Karam (Dover) had a sixth-place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 42'8.25".

Junior jumper Jessica Edwards (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) had a personal-best of 34'7" in the triple jump to take second place. In their first collegiate meet, freshman jumper Heather Orr (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) took third in the high jump by clearing a jump of 4'11"while freshman jumper Abby Lewicki (Medina/Highland) placed sixth in the pole vault in her first collegiate meet, clearing 9'6.5".

Sophomore All-OAC distance runner Kelly Brennan (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) won the 1-mile event in 5:08.38 and the 3,000-meter run in 10:33.35 while sophomore All-OAC distance runner Bella Pendola (Warsaw/River View) took fourth in both events with a career-best 5:24.29 in the 1-mile and 11:05.36 in the 3,000. Sophomore distance runner Katie Fowler (Mount Vernon) was the runner-up in the 800-meter run in 2:31.09 and freshman distance runner Madison Kile (North Canton/Hoover) placed fifth in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:15.78

Freshmen sprinters Rebecca Penrose (Springfield/Shawnee) and Ky'leana Allen (Columbus/Bishop Hartley) placed second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter dash in times of 1:03.78 and 1:03.99, respectively. Junior sprinter Grace Nemeth (Medina) took the runner-up spot in the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.89 seconds while Allen was sixth in the same race, running 27.74 seconds.

In relay action, the team of Penrose, Kile, Fowler and Brennan won the 4x400 relay in 4:14.53, the only women's relay that the Yellow Jackets ran on the day.

BW will be back in action on Friday, January 26, when the Yellow Jackets host the Dr. William Taraschke Classic on the Harrison Dillard Track inside the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse. Field events will begin at 4 p.m. while running events will begin at approximately 5 p.m.
