Eight Men’s Wrestlers Set for NCAA Division III Championships

BEREA, Ohio – The Ohio Athletic Conference Champion and NCAA Division III Central Regional Champion Baldwin Wallace University men's wrestling team will be represented by eight student-athletes at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse on March 15 and 16 at the Lacrosse Center.

The eight men's wrestlers are senior All-American 125-pounder Jacob Decatur (Akron/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), senior All-American 133-pounder Jaden Hinton (Glassboro, N.J.), senior All-American 149-pounder Michael Petrella (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley), junior All-OAC 157-pounder Tommy West (Avon Lake/St. Edward), freshman All-OAC 165-pounder Andrew Supers (Medina), junior All-OAC 174-pounder Carter Lloyd (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC 197-pounder Luke Hopkins (Cuyahoga Heights) and senior All-American 285-pounder Doug Byrne (Wickliffe).

Decatur, the 2024 National Runner Up and the 2023 National Champion, is making his third straight appearance.  This season, he has a record of 26-2 with a career-best seven technical falls, career-high tying three pins and one major decision.  Decatur was a three-time invitational champion. For his career, Decatur ranks 26th on the all-time wins list with a record of 86-5.  He has tallied 16 major decisions, 15 technical falls and seven pins.  Decatur is a three-time All-OAC first-team selection, three-time Central Region Champion and two-time OAC Men's Wrestler of the Week honoree.

Hinton, who was the Central Region Champion, is making his third straight appearance after placing fourth a year ago.  This season, he has a record of 36-2 with a career-best 18 technical falls, seven major decisions and a career-high five pins.  Hinton was a four-time invitational champion.  For his career, Hinton ranks 13th on the all-times wins list with a record of 101-17.  He has recorded 38 technical falls, 29 major decisions and seven pins. Hinton is a three-time All-Central Region honoree, two-time All-OAC selection and an OAC Men's Wrestler of the Week honoree.

Petrella, the 2024 National Champion and the 2023 National Runner Up, is making his third straight appearance. This season, he was named the OAC Wrestler of the Year and Central Region Most Outstanding Wrestler.  Petrella has an undefeated record of 38-0 with career-best 15 pins, career-high 15 technical falls and a career-best tying five major decisions.  He was a four-time invitational champion, two-time OAC Men's Wrestler of the Week honoree and D3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week honoree. For his career, Petrella ranks 11th on the all-time wins list with a record of 109-4.  He has tallied 42 pins, 23 technical falls and 15 major decisions.

West, who makes his second straight appearance, was the Central Region runner-up for the second consecutive season.  This season, he has a record of 35-12 with 12 pins, career-best nine technical falls and a career-high six major decisions.  West was an All-OAC first-team selection, the Mid-States Invitational Champion on February 17 and the OAC Men's Wrestler of the Week on February 19. For his career, West ranks tied for 29th on the all-times wins list with a record of 83-29.  He has recorded 30 pins, 14 technical falls and 11 major decisions. Off the mat, West is a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American.

Supers, who makes his first appearance, finished third at the Central Region Championships. This season, he has a record of 34-7 with 11 technical falls, seven pins and four major decisions.  Supers was an All-OAC first-team selection, a three-time invitational champion and the OAC Men's Wrestler of the Week on February 5.

Lloyd, who makes his first appearance, finished third at the Central Region Championships.  This season, he has a record 33-7 with a career-best seven pins, career-high five major decisions and a career-best three technical falls.  Lloyd was an All-OAC first-team selection, three-time invitational champion and the OAC Men's Wrestler of the Week on February 12.  For his career, Lloyd ranks tied for 44th on the all-time wins list with a record of 71-30.  He has tallied 16 pins, nine major decisions and six technical falls.

Hopkins, who is making his second straight appearance, was the Central Region runner-up after being the 184-pound champion in 2023.  This season, he has a record of 18-7 with a career-best five technical falls, two pins and two major decisions.  For his career, Hopkins has a record of 44-26 with eight pins, eight technical falls and four major decisions. He is a two-time All-OAC selection, including a first-team pick this season. Off the mat, Hopkins is a three-time Academic All-OAC honoree, two-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American, Dean's List student, Jacket Scholar and a member of Member of Chi Alpha Sigma and Dayton C. Miller honoraries. 

Byrne, the 2024 Central Region 285-pound Champion and the 2023 Central Region 197-pound Champion, is making his third straight appearance after finishing fifth a year ago.  This season, Byrne has a record of 35-3 with a career-best 21 pins, career-high six major decisions and one technical fall.  He was a two-time invitational champion and the OAC Men's Wrestler of the Week on November 18.  For his career, Byrne ranks seventh on the all-time wins list with a record of 116-18.  He has recorded 70 pins, 17 major decisions and four technical falls.  Byrne is a four-time All-OAC honoree, including the last three as a first-team selection, Off the mat, he is a National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American.

Wrestling action begins with morning sessions each day at 10 a.m. with evening sessions slated to start at 7 p.m.
