Nine Baseball Players Earn Academic All-OAC Honors

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio- Nine Baldwin Wallace University baseball student-athletes have been selected to the 2018 Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference team.

In order to be selected to the Academic All-OAC team, a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher in class standing, maintain varsity status and have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

Senior All-OAC infielder Spencer Badia (Bellaire), sophomore catcher Jake Smith (Medina), sophomore infielder Lane Niemann (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South), junior pitcher Matt Kocur (Rocky River), sophomore outfielder Brandon Dim (Solon), junior outfielder Andy Blough (Wooster/Smithville), sophomore pitcher Michael Hubert (Cincinnati/Oak Hills), senior pitcher Brandon Wysong (Bradford) and junior outfielder Reese Albright (Parma/North Royalton) are nine of the 41 spring student-athletes to recognized.

Badia, who earns his third consecutive Academic All-OAC honor, is a pre-physical therapy major who carries a 4.0 grade point average. The senior is a Dean's List student, a Jacket Scholar, a 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Division III Academic All-District 7 team selection, a 2017 CoSIDA Division III Academic All-American second-team selection and a member of Alpha Chi Lambda Honor Society and Chi Alpha Sigma honoraries. He was named as the 2017-2018 BW Male Clyde Lamb Award winner, which is awarded to student-athletes who exemplify great sportsmanlike conduct and have a minimum grade point average of 3.00. Badia was named as the 2018 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Co-Most Valuable Player, the 2018 OAC Tournament all-tournament team and a first-team Google Cloud Division III Academic All-District 7 selection. In the 2018 season, the senior appeared in 38 games and finished third on the team with a career-best .358 batting average and five home runs.

Smith, who garners his first Academic All-OAC honor, is a public health and biology double major who carries a 3.85 GPA. The sophomore is a Dean's List student and a Jacket Scholar. He appeared in one game in the 2018 season.

Niemann earns his first Academic All-OAC accolade. The finance major, who carries a 3.83 GPA, is a Dean's List student and a Jacket Scholar. Appearing in 18 games, the sophomore batted .296 with one home run and a career-high five runs batted-in.

Kocur, who earns his first Academic-OAC honor, is a middle childhood education major who carries a 3.82 GPA. The junior is a Dean's List student, a Jacket Scholar and a member of the Chi Sigma Alpha Athletics Honor Society. He made one appearance in the 2018 campaign, striking out a batter.

Dim, earning his first Academic All-OAC accolade, is a sport management major who carries a 3.80 GPA. He is a Dean's List student and a Jacket Scholar. This season, the outfielder made 17 appearances and scored four runs.  

Blough is a national security major who earns his second straight Academic All-OAC honor. The junior carries a 3.72 GPA, is a Dean's List student, a Jacket Scholar and a member of the Chi Sigma Alpha Athletics Honor Society. He made 25 appearances and recorded a hit. 

Hubert, who earns his first Academic All-OAC selection, is a finance and accounting double major who carries a 3.71 grade point average. The sophomore is a Dean's List student and a Jacket Scholar. He started two games this season and was second on the team with a career-best ERA of 2.27. He struck out 37 batters in 43.2 innings pitched.

Wysong, who earns his first career Academic All-OAC honor, is an early childhood education major who carries a 3.54 GPA. He is a Dean's List student and a Jacket Scholar. In his senior year, the pitcher appeared in nine games, making seven starts. He won a career-best four games and struck out a career-high 26 batters.

Albright, who earns his second straight Academic All-OAC selection, is a political science major who carries a 3.5 GPA. He is a Dean's List student, a Jacket Scholar and a member of the Chi Sigma Alpha Athletics Honor Society. The junior appeared in 28 games during the 2018 campaign, tallying 16 hits and scoring 17 runs.
