Baseball Falls to Otterbein in Highly Contested OAC Doubleheader

WESTERVILLE, Ohio –The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team dropped a highly contested Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to Otterbein University on Fishbaugh Field.

Otterbein (26-9, 13-3 OAC) won the first game in 10 innings by a final score of 11-10 and took the nightcap by a score of 4-3 as it scored the winning run in the ninth inning. 

In game one, BW (24-11, 9-7 OAC) scored 10 runs on 14 hits as it plated one run in the first, three in the second, two in the fifth and sixth and one in the seventh and eighth.   The Cardinals scored 11 runs on 12 hits as it scored two runs in the first, three in the third, two in the fifth, three in the eighth and one in the 10th.

The Yellow Jackets led by senior All-OAC right fielder Alex Marcum(Granville) and sophomore left fielder Dudley Taw(Sheffield Lake/Brookside) as each went 3-for-5.  Marcum had a home run, one run batted-in (RBI) and two runs scored. Tawhad a double, home run, two RBIs and three runs scored.  Senior center fielder Chase Knodle(Poland/Seminary), senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Spencer Badia(Bellaire), senior catcher Trent Kaltenbach(Plain City/Jonathan Alder), sophomore third baseman Jacob Bonner(Akron/Archbishop Hoban) all had a pair of base knocks.

On the mound, senior All-OAC lefty Evan Lovick(Mentor) got the start as he allowed seven runs (six earned) in five innings with two strikeouts. Senior lefty Jack Raines(Akron/Archbishop Hoban) pitched the next 2.2 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits with two strikeouts.   Sophomore left Michael Hubert(Cincinnati/Oak Hills) pitched one inning and did not allow a run or hit.  Senior righty Nick Patrone(Bellaire) took the loss as he allowed one run on one hit in one inning of action.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored three runs on six hits as they plated one run in the third inning and two in the sixth.  Otterbein scored four runs on 11 hits as it scored one run in the first, two in the second and one in the ninth.

BW was led by freshman shortstop Alex Ludwick(Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) as he went 2-for-3.  Badia,BonnerKnodleand sophomore pinch hitter Lane Niemann (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) each had a base hit.  Badiablasted his third homer of the season and Bonnerhad a double.

On the bump, junior right-hander Danny Cody(Medina/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) made the start and allowed three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in seven innings.  Rainesfaced one batter and allowed a run.  Sophomore left-hander Spencer Berg(New Albany) suffered the loss as he allowed one run on two hots with one strikeout in 1.1 innings.   

The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 29 when they host Denison University in a single nine-inning non-conference and Seniors' and Parents' Day game on Fisher Field at 1 p.m.   BW closes out the OAC portion of its schedule on Friday, May 4 when it travels to University Heights for a doubleheader against crosstown rival John Carroll University on Schweickert Field at 1 p.m.
